Skoda Considering To Launch First India-Made EV By March 2028

Skoda’s India-focused electric car might still be about two years away, suggests the top executive of the Czech Automaker’s local subsidiary

Skoda already offers three electric cars internationally and plans to expand the portfolio to five by next year. In India, however, the company does not appear to be bullish on EVs. Ashish Gupta, the Brand Director of Skoda’s Indian arm, has said that the company is considering introducing its first locally manufactured electric car between April 2027 and March 2028, as per a report from PTI. The company will be able to build a local ecosystem by this time, while the country’s charging infrastructure also evolves, he added.

Last month, a Reuters report suggested that Volkswagen Group wants to invest more in India but is deterred by policy uncertainties and intensifying competition. Earlier, in June, The Economic Times reported that it has approved an additional investment of one billion euros for the India 3.0 project, which will deliver new ICE and pure electric models.

Although Skoda has not announced any concrete plans for new locally manufactured models beyond the current crop of MQB A0 IN platform-based trio: Kylaq, Slavia, and Kushaq, a former company executive may have spilled the beans on the EV front. Former Brand Director Petr Janeba dropped some hints about the potential first made-in-India Skoda EV towards the end of his tenure earlier this year.

Speaking to Business Standard in April, Janeba revealed that Skoda has not decided on the platform for its first locally manufactured EV, but it will be a model unique to India. Speaking further, he indicated that the company has started design work, saying “product development is ongoing” and that the model will measure 4.5 metres in length.

Janeba also said that Skoda is planning two battery pack options for the India-made EV. This would allow it to aim at customers who have a lower budget or mainly drive in the city, and also those who often drive beyond city limits or want the reassurance of a longer range.

Skoda began testing the pre-facelift Enyaq in India in 2022 and showcased it publicly at Bharat Mobility Expo 2024. The company also offers a coupe version of this model internationally. At the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, the company showcased the Elroq.

Janeba told Acko Drive at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 that Skoda could bring two or maybe all three of its current global EVs to India by September, presumably all as low-volume imports. The company appears to have put the plan on hold as it waits for a favourable outcome from the upcoming EU-India FTA.

Top 10 SUVs September 2025 – Nexon, Creta, Scorpio, Punch, Fronx, Venue

GaadiWaadi -

Mahindra Scorpio N

In the table of top 10 SUVs for September 2025, Tata Nexon finished on top with Hyundai Creta and Mahindra Scorpio in second and third respectively

Last month turned out to be another defining one for India’s SUV market with compact and midsize models once again doing the heavy lifting. The latest dispatch data reveals steady performers and unexpected comebacks, led once again by Tata and Mahindra – two homegrown brands that continue to attract volumes and expand their footprint.

Sitting comfortably at the top, Tata Nexon has cemented its position as India’s best-selling SUV – nearly doubling its sales year-on-year. With 22,573 units dispatched in September, the Nexon outpaced every rival on its way to become the best-selling PV in India. The brand’s consistent updates and the EV variant’s popularity have clearly paid off.

Hot on its heels, Hyundai Creta continues to be the segment benchmark for midsize SUVs. Despite intense competition, the Creta posted an impressive 18,861 units – a healthy 19 per cent volume growth over last year. Mahindra’s Scorpio, meanwhile, is on a roll of its own. With 18,372 units, it has grown 27 per cent year-on-year – fuelled by continued demand for the Scorpio N and the more accessible Classic version.

The Tata Punch has had a revival phase lately – clocking nearly 16,000 units in September. Its small size, SUV-like stance and the arrival of the EV variant have certainly upped its appeal overall. The Maruti Suzuki Fronx, meanwhile, maintained solid volumes at 13,767 units, even with a minor dip versus last year.

Among lifestyle SUVs, Mahindra Thar continues to thrive with dispatches crossing 11,800 units with a 34 per cent jump year-on-year. The Hyundai Venue, too, held its ground at over 11,000 units due to the GST 2.0 benefits and additional discounts which lifted the sentiment across the board during this festive period in India.

Tata EVs Get Diwali Discounts Of Up To Rs. 1.90 Lakh In India

tata curvv EV-12

Tata Curvv EV gets Rs. 70,000 green bonus, Rs. 30,000 exchange support, Rs. 10,000 corporate offer and a generous Rs. 50,000 loyalty benefit

As sales in electric vehicle space intensifies during the festive season, Tata Motors has announced a range of aggressive discounts for its EV portfolio this month. The brand which already commands over 70 per cent share of the passenger EV market appears intent on consolidating its dominance further before the end of this year and the Diwali period holds key significance

The biggest festive discounts are available for the Curvv EV which tops the chart with total benefits of up to Rs. 1.9 lakh. Customers get a Rs. 70,000 green bonus, Rs. 30,000 exchange support, Rs. 10,000 corporate offer and a generous Rs. 50,000 loyalty benefit. The Curvv EV boasts a claimed driving range of up to 502 km between charges.

The Tiago EV and Punch EV, Tata’s volume mainstays, also see notable offers this month. Both carry maximum savings of Rs. 1.23 lakh. The Tiago EV remains the entry point into Tata’s zero-emission lineup with prices starting at Rs. 7.99 lakh while the Punch EV continues to be an attractive option for under Rs. 15 lakh.

At the higher end, the Nexon EV – India’s best-selling electric SUV – receives more modest offers with a total of up to Rs. 90,000. The flagship Harrier EV, launched only a few months ago, doesn’t rely on deep discounts. Instead, Tata is offering a Rs. 1 lakh loyalty incentive as it focusses on existing brand owners looking to upgrade into premium electric territory.

The current festive discounts also doubles as a transition phase – clearing MY2024 stock. If the response matches expectations, Tata could close 2025 with a stronger foothold in EV sales as well as in overall passenger vehicle market share – continuing the momentum that recently saw it surpass 15 per cent market share.

Top 10 Cars September 2025 – Nexon, Dzire, Creta, Scorpio, Swift

GaadiWaadi -

Tata Nexon

The Nexon helped Tata Motors to register its highest monthly sales tally in India as it finished ahead of Maruti Suzuki Dzire and Hyundai Creta

The car sales charts saw a major shake-up in September 2025 with Tata Motors stealing the limelight thanks to the Nexon’s record-breaking performance. The company’s consistent focus on expanding its EV and ICE portfolio has clearly started to pay off. The compact SUV emerged as the top-selling car in the country recording a total of 22,573 units – almost doubling its September 2024 numbers.

The 97 per cent year-on-year jump shows how Tata has managed to capture both mainstream and EV buyers with one nameplate. The SUV’s wide range of variants, features and high-standard build quality have helped it secure mass appeal. In fact, the Nexon’s rise directly contributed to Tata’s overall market share climbing from 11.4 to 15.8 per cent in just one year.

The Maruti Suzuki Dzire followed closely with 20,038 units – up by 85 per cent on a year-on-year basis. The compact sedan’s healthy run exemplifies the sustained demand for affordable cars. While Maruti remains the country’s largest carmaker, its overall sales dropped by 8.4 per cent compared to last year.

Interestingly, despite five Maruti models featuring in the top 10, the company’s market share fell from 40.4 to 35.1 per cent. In third place stood Hyundai’s Creta, clocking 18,861 units with a 19 per cent jump from last year. The SUV continues to lead the midsize SUV class and remains Hyundai’s best-seller in the domestic market.

The Mahindra Scorpio range comprising the Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N followed with 18,372 units – registering 27 per cent year-on-year growth. The SUV maker recently introduced the updated 3-door Thar, Bolero and Bolero Neo and they will help garner more volume sales during this festive season as well.

At number five, the Tata Punch maintained its momentum with 15,891 units sold – up 16 per cent year-on-year. Close behind, Maruti’s Swift managed 15,547 units – slightly lower than last year’s 16,241. Rounding out the top ten were the Wagon R, Fronx, Baleno and Ertiga. However, the overarching story of September 2025 was Tata’s rise.

The festive period as well as the GST 2.0 tax benefits which lowered asking prices for models significantly could not have come at a better time. They will certainly provide the volume surge in the remaining months of this calendar year.

Tata Posts Highest Market Share Growth In Sep 2025 Car Sales

GaadiWaadi -

Tata Punch

Tata registered a domestic sales tally of 59,667 units last month with a huge 45.3 per cent jump and secured nearly 16 per cent market share

The dispatches in the PV market showed 5.5 per cent year-on-year growth to 3,78,457 units in September 2025 as Maruti Suzuki finished ahead of Tata, Mahindra, Hyundai and Toyota. The GST 2.0 impact and festive season buzz helped most carmakers record sequential growth but none matched Tata Motors’ staggering surge in both volume and share.

On the back of good reception for its SUV range, Tata Motors registered a domestic tally of 59,667 units last month with a huge 45.3 per cent jump compared to 41,065 units a year earlier. The volume increase outpaced the industry’s average growth and also helped the company secure a 15.8 per cent market share.

Tata’s share rose by 4.3 per cent on a year-on-year basis – the biggest gain among all manufacturers in September. The surge pushed Tata comfortably into the number two position – narrowing the gap with long-time leader Maruti Suzuki which reported a 8.4 per cent drop in sales to 1,32,821 units while Hyundai dropped to fourth.

The market share of Maruti Suzuki slipped from 40.4 per cent in September 2024 to 35.1 per cent this year – a decline of 5.3 percentage points. Tata’s growth was powered by the sustained demand for its Nexon and Punch along with its EV range. The company recorded its highest quarterly sales in Q2 FY26 courtesy of the highest monthly sales ever in September.

High demand for the Punch EV, Nexon EV and Tiago EV along with aggressive festive offers and production ramp up, allowed Tata to capitalise on the improved retail environment following the introduction of the GST 2.0 tax slab. The Nexon range garnered over 22,500 units last month as it was the most sold passenger vehicle in the country – setting an individual record for Tata in the process.

Mahindra continued to strengthen its position in third place – selling 56,233 units – up 10.1 per cent year-on-year. Its portfolio of SUVs, particularly the XUV 3XO, Scorpio N, XUV 700 and Thar, continues to see high volumes. Hyundai followed in fourth place with 51,547 units – posting a modest 0.9 per cent annual growth but a notable 17.1 per cent increase month-on-month.

Toyota maintained its steady climb with a 13.8 per cent year-on-year gain – selling 27,089 units and improving its market share to 7.2 per cent. Kia, however, witnessed a slight dip of 3.5 per cent year-on-year – even as its MoM sales rose nearly 16 per cent.
