JLR & Chery To Reintroduce Freelander Nameplate With New Electrified SUVs

JLR Freelander Teaser

JLR and Chery revive Freelander as electrified SUV brand for China

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has partnered with Chinese automaker Chery to bring back the Freelander nameplate, this time for a new range of electrified SUVs. The first model under this revived identity is scheduled to make its global debut on March 31, with China confirmed as the initial market.

The upcoming Freelander line will be developed under the existing JLR-Chery joint venture. While JLR will oversee the design and brand positioning, Chery will take responsibility for the underlying platform and engineering. This collaboration reflects a broader strategy to combine JLR’s design expertise with Chery’s local manufacturing and technology capabilities.

Unlike Jaguar Land Rover’s current portfolio structure, the new Freelander range will not be part of the company’s ‘House of Brands’ approach, which separates its offerings into Jaguar, Defender, Discovery and Range Rover verticals. Instead, Freelander will function as an independent product line, targeted at a different segment and sold through a separate dealer network managed by Chery in China.

Production will take place at the Chery-JLR joint venture facility. The new range is expected to fill the gap left by models such as the Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque, which are likely to be phased out from local production in China.

In terms of underpinnings, the new Freelander models are expected to use a platform developed by Chery, potentially the T1X architecture that is already used across several of its vehicles. The first SUV is anticipated to feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain, aligning with the growing demand for electrified mobility in the Chinese market.

Design-wise, early previews suggest a modern SUV silhouette with coupe-inspired elements and a distinctive lighting signature. JLR has indicated that the design direction will draw cues from the original Freelander while adapting it for contemporary buyers with a focus on technology and urban usability.

The Freelander nameplate itself has been absent for nearly a decade. First introduced in 1997, it played a key role in establishing the compact premium SUV segment and was among the early Land Rover models to adopt a monocoque construction. The model was discontinued in 2015 and effectively succeeded by the Discovery Sport.

Its return signals a shift in strategy, with the name now being used for a new generation of electrified SUVs tailored primarily for the Chinese market, with the possibility of expansion into other regions in the future.

Upcoming Hyundai Compact SUV – What We Know So Far

GaadiWaadi -

2024 Hyundai Bayon Facelift_-2

Hyundai’s new compact SUV likely to slot above the latest Venue, targeting younger customers looking for more sportiness and refinement

The compact SUV segment has emerged as one of the largest and fastest-growing in India over the past decade. With the GST reductions of up to 13% announced in September last year, its popularity is expected to rise further. Hyundai already offers the Venue in this space, and later this year, it will strengthen its presence with a second model.

The new compact SUV will be the second generation of the Hyundai Bayon, which was originally unveiled in March 2021, mainly aimed at European countries. The first-gen model was never brought to our market, but the second-gen model will be sold, likely as a more dynamically styled and high-tech alternative to the second-gen Venue.

Internally referred to by the codename ‘Hyundai BC4i CUV,’ the second-gen Hyundai Bayon will be based on the same platform as the fourth-gen Hyundai i20 (codename: Hyundai BC4i). The SUV could arrive in showrooms around Diwali this year, while the hatchback may follow in the second quarter of 2027.

2024 Hyundai Bayon Facelift_-5

Hyundai will manufacture the next-gen Bayon in India at its main plant in Sriperumbudur (Tamil Nadu). The company will likely offer it with the all-new Venue’s 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 88.3 kW (118 hp) and 172 Nm of torque, as well as a newly developed 1.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. There’s no word on the availability of a diesel engine.

Hyundai plans to equip the next-gen Bayon with 17-inch alloy wheels internationally and could do the same in India to distinguish it from the latest Venue and more strongly emphasise the model’s dynamic character. The company may use the larger wheels exclusively in the N Line variant, which it is developing alongside the standard model.

Other key features may include all-LED lighting, front and rear disc brakes, an electronic parking brake, dual 12.3-inch cockpit displays, four USB Type-C charging ports, a wireless smartphone charger, ventilated front seats with power adjustment on the driver side, and Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems. Hyundai may also offer a dual-pane panoramic sunroof in the next-gen Bayon, in what would be another key differentiating point from the all-new Venue.

2026 TVS Apache RTR 160 4V gets a Class-D projector headlamp, full LED lighting setup, and assist and slipper clutch as standard

The 2026 iteration of the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V has officially gone on sale in India with a significant round of upgrades to improve safety, visibility and rider engagement. Prices for the new 4V range begin at Rs. 1,25,440 ex-showroom Delhi while the Apache RTR lineup now starts from Rs. 1,12,190. As part of the MY update, TVS has expanded the variant lineup and standardised several key features across trims.

One of the biggest highlights is the wider availability of premium features that was previously limited to the top-spec variant. The inclusion of a Class-D projector headlamp, full LED lighting setup, and assist and slipper clutch has now been extended to more variants – making the motorcycle more accessible for consumers than before.

The updated lighting system is a major step up in terms of visibility perspective and improved safety. The new projector headlamp with integrated LED Daytime Running Lights has been brought in to significantly improve night-time visibility while the all-LED package includes LED turn indicators as well enabling a more modern looking front end.

Another key mechanical upgrade comes in the form of the assist and slipper clutch which plays a crucial role in improving riding quality. It allows smoother downshifts, reduces rear wheel hop under aggressive braking and makes city riding more comfortable by reducing clutch effort. No mechanical changes have been made though as the familiar bits continue.

The 2026 TVS Apache RTR 160 4V continues to produce a maximum power output of 17.55 PS – maintaining its position as one of the most powerful offerings in the 160 cc category. It also retains its three ride modes – Sport, Urban and Rain – along with features like radial tyres, a hydro-formed handlebar and Bluetooth connectivity system with navigation and call alerts.

The variant lineup has also been streamlined to offer clearer differentiation. The top-spec trim continues with upside-down front forks, traction control and a 5-inch TFT display.

Commenting on the new launch, Vimal Sumbly, Head Business – Premium, TVS Motor
Company,

2026 Honda City Facelift Spotted Testing Ahead Of Global Debut

2027 Honda City Spied

Honda City facelift spotted testing with minor design and feature updates

The updated Honda City has been spotted undergoing testing overseas, indicating that a mid-cycle refresh for the sedan is in the works. While the next-generation model is expected later in the decade, this update is likely to focus on incremental changes rather than a comprehensive overhaul.

Test mules seen abroad suggest revisions to the exterior design. The front fascia appears to feature a reworked grille and bumper, along with updated headlamp detailing that could lend a sharper look. These changes seem to align with Honda’s newer design direction seen on global models. At the rear, minor updates to the bumper design are also expected, while new alloy wheel designs may refresh the side profile.

Dimensionally, the sedan is likely to remain largely unchanged, as is typical for a facelift. Interior updates are expected to be limited to cosmetic tweaks such as revised seat upholstery and minor trim changes. Reports also indicate that additional features could be introduced, depending on the market.

For India, the equipment list is expected to remain broadly similar, although features like a 360-degree camera and ventilated seats could be considered for higher variants. However, it remains to be seen how many of the updates from international models will carry over to the India-spec version.

Mechanically, no changes are anticipated. The City is expected to continue with its existing 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with either a manual gearbox or a CVT. The hybrid variant is also likely to remain part of the lineup. Power and torque figures are expected to stay consistent with the current model.

Globally, variations in output and fuel compatibility will continue depending on regional requirements. For instance, models sold in markets like Brazil use flexible fuel setups, leading to slight differences in performance figures.

The facelifted City is expected to debut internationally later this year, with India launch timelines likely to follow. As with previous updates, Honda may align changes across markets while tailoring features based on regional demand.

Rolls-Royce Reconsiders All-Electric Target, V12 Engines To Continue Beyond 2030

2024 Rolls-Royce Cullinan Facelift

Rolls-Royce delays full EV transition, retains V12 engines amid demand

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has stepped back from its earlier plan to transition to a fully electric lineup by 2030. The company’s CEO, Chris Brownridge, indicated that evolving market conditions, changing regulations and varied customer preferences have influenced this decision.

The British luxury carmaker had previously outlined a strategy to phase out internal combustion engines by the end of the decade, with its first electric model, the Spectre, marking the beginning of that shift. However, the company now appears to be adopting a more flexible approach, balancing electric mobility with continued demand for traditional powertrains.

According to Brownridge, customer sentiment remains divided, particularly in the ultra-luxury segment where the brand operates. While there is interest in electric vehicles, a section of buyers still prefers the characteristics associated with Rolls-Royce’s V12 engines, which have long been a defining element of the brand’s identity.

At present, Rolls-Royce’s entire combustion-engine portfolio – including models such as the Ghost, Phantom and Cullinan – continues to rely on V12 power. The company has not indicated an immediate phase-out timeline for these engines, suggesting they will remain part of the lineup for the foreseeable future.

Despite the revised stance, Rolls-Royce is continuing work on expanding its electric portfolio. The brand is expected to introduce an all-electric SUV in the near future, with test prototypes already seen undergoing evaluation. This model is likely to complement, rather than replace, its existing offerings.

Sales trends also appear to reflect the mixed demand. While the Spectre EV marked the brand’s entry into electric mobility, reports suggest a decline in its annual sales figures, whereas traditional models such as the Cullinan SUV continue to record stronger volumes.

Rolls-Royce is not alone in reassessing its electrification roadmap. Several global automakers, including Volvo, Bentley, Lamborghini and Porsche, have also revised or delayed their transition timelines, indicating a broader industry shift towards a more gradual adoption of electric vehicles.

The development highlights the ongoing uncertainty around the pace of electrification, particularly in premium segments where customer expectations and usage patterns differ from the mass market.
