Land Rover’s Baby Defender Is Finally Happening – What To Expect

GaadiWaadi -

Defender Octa 1

Land Rover Baby Defender will more likely be introduced in 2027 and it could appeal to a wider range of customers globally

Land Rover is looking to expand its Defender family with a new compact electric SUV, tentatively dubbed the “Baby Defender.” Slated for a 2027 debut, this smaller derivative may bring the rugged appeal of the legendary 4×4 into a more urban-friendly and technologically advanced package.

The Defender’s history stretches back to 1948 with the original Series models which cemented the brand’s reputation for off-road prowess. Over the decades, wheelbase variations of 90, 110 and 127 inches defined the utility lineup until 1990 when the Defender badge formally separated the model from the Discovery. After decades of production, the classic model was discontinued in 2016, before the modern full-size Defender re-emerged in 2020 to widespread acclaim.

The Baby Defender will occupy the entry-level tier of the lineup – positioned beneath the standard SUV while retaining the family’s signature boxy and upright silhouette. Spy shots suggest a squared-off stance with strong fender lines, LED lighting that mirrors its bigger sibling and unpainted lower cladding.

Built on Land Rover’s Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA), the compact Defender is expected to feature dual electric motors – offering all-wheel-drive capability. An 800V electrical system may allow ultra-fast charging up to 350 kW while battery packs will reportedly come from Tata’s upcoming UK gigafactory. Final assembly will take place at Land Rover’s Merseyside plant.

Measuring around 4.6 metres in length, roughly 2 metres in width and under 1.8 metres tall, the Baby Defender will look to be a versatile offering for both urban commutes and off-road adventures. Its compact dimensions and electric drivetrain could attract younger buyers, in particular, who seek off-road thrill.

The cabin is expected to integrate modern digital displays, connected car technology and driver-assistance features – denoting the trend in Land Rover’s newer EV and hybrid offerings. Despite its smaller size, the SUV will likely borrow premium design cues from its full-size sibling.

Set to rival upcoming compact luxury EVs like Mercedes-Benz’s “Little G,” the Baby Defender could be considered for developing markets like India as well.

Mahindra XUV700 facelift will likely go on sale early next year with a host of updates inside and out

Mahindra’s XUV700 appears to be nearing a major mid-cycle refresh. Spy shots of heavily camouflaged prototypes suggest that the updated SUV is in advanced stages of testing – pointing to an expected debut in the early months of 2026. The facelift is said to bring notable design tweaks, upgraded equipment and new features inside the cabin.

The latest test mules of the XUV700 facelift hint at a redesigned front end featuring a reworked bumper and updated headlamp elements that can be discerned even beneath the camouflage. Mahindra seems to be retaining the signature flush-type door handles from the current version. Along the sides, overall profile will more likely remain unchanged.

The facelifted XUV700 is also expected to sport a new design for its alloy wheels while retaining the same overall dimensions and glasshouse as the current model. Mahindra will likely complement these subtle design tweaks with a few new exterior paint options. At the rear, the XUV700’s taillights seem to retain their familiar outline – though the internal detailing looks to be subtly revised.

The equipment list will be headlined by a new triple-screen setup.

Front ventilated seats, an updated suite of Level 2 ADAS functions, automatic climate control and wireless phone charging will remain. Other highlights will include USB Type-C ports, a 360-degree camera system, full-LED lighting, ambient illumination, multiple airbags, adjustable headrests, and the latest iteration of Mahindra’s connected car technology.

Both units have already earned praise for their strong performance, so Mahindra appears set to carry them over without major changes. Transmission choices will remain familiar too with six-speed manual and six-speed torque converter automatic gearboxes expected to continue serving across variants.

Tata, Renault And Nissan To Challenge Hyundai Creta Soon

GaadiWaadi -

Nissan Tekton (2)

Three highly anticipated mid-size SUVs inching close to launch, with one model just weeks away from breaking cover

The Hyundai Creta may have dominated the mid-size SUV segment for years, but the competition in this segment is about to get intense soon. Tata Motors, Renault, and Nissan are working on new mid-size SUVs that hold the potential to give a solid fight to the long-established segment leader.

Tata Motors is bringing back the Sierra in a whole new avatar in November. The future Tata Sierra, previewed in a near-production form at Auto Expo 2025, will feature a squarish design and have a practical four-door layout.

The reborn Sierra will be the first Tata model to be available with a brand-new 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine. A turbocharged version of the same will also be available, with 168 hp and 280 Nm of torque. Also expected is a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine producing 116 hp and 260 Nm of torque.

A Sierra.ev is also in the works, and it will arrive shortly after its ICE donor. The Sierra.ev is expected to stand out in its segment with a dual-motor AWD setup, a front passenger touchscreen, and a lounge version with a 2+2 seating layout.

Renault is likely just about two months away from announcing the third-generation Duster in India. The all-new model flaunts a brute exterior that offers unmatched road presence and a modern interior with a myriad of new convenience and comfort features, barring India’s much-loved sunroof.

The all-new Duster will likely go on sale in January 2026 with a 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine that develops around 160 horsepower and around 250 Nm of torque. Renault will introduce a hybrid variant within a year, but it does not plan to offer a diesel engine, unlike in the first-gen model.

Nissan is developing a Terrano successor called ‘Tekton’ and plans to launch it in June-July 2026. The Nissan Tekton will be a corporate cousin of the third-gen Renault Duster, but it will have a character of its own. Nissan has already revealed the exterior, showing a sharper design with cues borrowed from the seventh-gen Nissan Patrol. The engines, transmissions, and features should be completely the same as those of the latest Renault Duster.

Nissan Magnite AMT With CNG Option Launched In India

GaadiWaadi -

Nissan Magnite

The CNG retrofit kit for Nissan Magnite AMT is priced at Rs. 71,999; comes with a three-year or one lakh kilometre warranty

Nissan Motor India has expanded its CNG retrofitment program to include the Magnite AMT. Following strong customer demand for the retrofitment option introduced earlier this year for the manual variant, the new update has been introduced. Alongside the expansion, Nissan has brought in a re-engineered fuelling system with an integrated fuel lid.

This allows customers to refill CNG through the standard lid instead of the earlier engine-bay setup – a notable improvement that could improve everyday convenience. The Magnite AMT now becomes one of the few compact SUVs in India to offer a government approved CNG retrofit option with an automated manual transmission.

The retrofit kit has been developed and validated by Motozen Fuel Systems and comes with a three years or one lakh kilometre standard warranty. Reflecting the recent GST reduction from 28 per cent to 18 per cent, Nissan has priced the retrofitment kit at Rs.71,999. Despite the additional engineering updates and improved integration, the company has chosen to retain the same MRP – effectively passing on the GST advantage to customers.

The retrofitment kit is now available across authorised Nissan CNG centres in India from September 22, 2025. The retrofitment program now covers 13 states including Delhi-NCR, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and several others. The retrofit option remains exclusive to the 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.

It is available with both manual and AMT transmission options. On the safety front, the Nissan Magnite continues to offer six airbags as standard and boasts a Global NCAP rating of five stars for adult occupant protection. The Japanese brand also offers ten years of extended warranty plan for the Magnite which is a first-in-segment.

The company’s SUV portfolio will be expanded with the inclusion of a new midsize SUV, a seven-seater SUV and an A-segment EV over the next 2 years.

Mahindra Launching A New Electric SUV Soon – What Could It Be?

GaadiWaadi -

Mahindra XEV 7E EV

Mahindra to wrap up calendar year 2025 with one more EV launch, expanding its zero-emission portfolio to four models

Following the XUV400 in 2023, Mahindra launched the BE 6 and XEV 9e electric SUVs earlier this year. The company plans to bring one more electric SUV to its showrooms this year. During a recent interaction with CNBC-TV18, Nalinikanth Gollagunta, the CEO of Mahindra & Mahindra’s Automotive Division, revealed plans to launch a new EV in November. Gollagunta did not disclose any details about the upcoming EV, though.

Mahindra has been working on several EVs, but two of them appear to be pretty close to commercial readiness, and the company has been testing both of them extensively on public roads. One is the XEV 7e, a normally-styled, three-row equivalent of the XEV 9e and a pure electric alternative to the XUV700.

The Mahindra XEV 7e, first previewed by the Mahindra XUV.e8 concept in August 2022, will be India’s first locally manufactured electric SUV offering three-row seating. The company could offer it in the same standard-range and long-range variants as the XEV 9e.

Although the former would offer limited practicality in the XEV 7e, considering the model’s heavier weight and higher seating capacity, it may still make the cut due to its significant cost advantages.

The XEV 7e standard-range could use a 228 hp/380 Nm rear motor and a 59 kWh LFP battery pack, while the XEV 7e long-range may have a 282 hp/380 Nm rear motor and a 79 kWh LFP battery pack. With the battery pack full, the former could travel close to 500 km and the latter somewhere around 600 km.

Mahindra may offer the XEV 7e with features like a frunk, a kick-activated power tailgate, a front passenger touchscreen, semi-adaptive dampers, a 1,400-watt, 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system with Dolby Atmos, 65-watt USB Type-C charging ports, AutoPark, Level 2+ advanced driver assistance systems, and seven airbags.

The second possible model is the XUV 3XO EV, a derivative of the XUV 3XO. The sub-4 metre electric SUV is expected to be launched with a 35 kWh battery pack. It would look close to its donor model, with visual differences limited to obvious tweaks such as a covered upper grille area and specially designed wheels, both aimed at improved aerodynamics. The XUV 3XO EV would directly compete with Tata Motors’ Nexon.ev.
