Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and Nissan plan to bring four new MPVs to Indian showrooms in the near-to mid-term future
SUVs may be dominating the Indian auto market, but MPVs continue holding significance among a sizeable chunk of family car buyers. In FY2025, MPVs enjoyed a 10% market share in India’s car market, and the demand is rising, as an increasing number of Indians hop on the trend of road trips and leisure travel.
Maruti Suzuki is already present in the MPV segment with the Ertiga and XL6, and in the next two years, it will expand to four models. The Indo-Japanese joint venture is working on an electric MPV codenamed ‘Maruti YMC,’ designed to be positioned against the Kia Carens Clavis EV. The company plans to launch it by September next year.
The Maruti YMC should come with 49 kWh and 61 kWh LFP battery packs, paired with 142 hp/192.5 Nm and 172 hp/192.5 Nm motors, respectively. It could deliver a range of up to around 475 km in the top variant. A Toyota-badged corporate cousin is also planned, and it should arrive a few months later.

Maruti Suzuki has been eyeing the sub-4 metre MPV space for years now and will finally foray into this segment in 2027. Internally called ‘Maruti YDB,’ the small MPV will be based on the Suzuki Solio, an A-segment Japanese MPV designed with proportions similar to kei cars but with a larger body and a bigger engine. Maruti Suzuki could offer this model with its new Z12E 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine as well as the upcoming series-hybrid system based on this engine.
Hyundai has been contemplating an India-focused MPV for well over a decade now. The company showcased the Hexa Space concept in 2012, previewing a potential Maruti Ertiga rival, and in 2015, it confirmed plans to launch such a model. The company shelved plans and shifted its focus to SUVs in light of changing consumer trends.

Last week, at its first investor day event in India, Hyundai announced again that it plans to launch an MPV. This model will be completely different from the previously planned MPV, in line with the latest industry standards for comfort, connectivity, and safety, and incorporating Hyundai’s latest design language.
Globally, Hyundai offers three MPVs, namely Stargazer, Custo/Custin, and Staria. The Stargazer, the smallest one of the trio, is the perfect fit for India. Hyundai developed it as an Ertiga rival primarily for Southeast Asian markets. That said, the model is already three years old and received its mid-life facelift recently. Hyundai may directly bring the next-gen model here sometime in 2027, based on the same platform as the next-gen Creta scheduled to arrive in February 2028.

Nissan couldn’t succeed with its first MPV in India, the Evalia, which was significantly larger and more spacious than the Maruti Ertiga. The company now plans to make another attempt at MPVs, but this time in a lower segment. It is working on a rebadged version of the Renault Triber and has commenced its road testing, having scheduled its launch in February 2026.
