New compact SUV likely to slot above the Kiger and be distinguished with a stronger road presence, more space, comfort, and convenience, and higher safety
Renault is making a strong comeback in India, with at least three major launches planned by 2028. Following the third-generation Duster and the seven-seat SUV derived from it, the company is likely to introduce a mini-Duster designed to compete with the Tata Nexon.
The Renault Kiger has not been selling as well as the brand expected, and to solidify its position in the segment, the French automaker is likely to launch a new model with a squarer and tougher exterior that resonates better with the taste of Indian SUV buyers. The company could position the new model above the Kiger, just as Kia offers both Sonet and Syros in the compact SUV segment.
The new model will be based on the same platform as the third-generation Duster – CMF-B, which has two versions, namely LS (Low Specifications) and HS (High Specifications). Like the Duster and the upcoming three-row SUV, the compact SUV will be based on the LS version to keep the production costs in check.

The mini-Duster will likely be wider and taller than the Kiger and should have a longer wheelbase. The bigger dimensions and more conventional proportions may translate to greater passenger and cargo space.
While the Duster and the three-row SUV derived from it will be available even with a full-hybrid powertrain, the mini-Duster could be a strictly ICE model. Renault may offer it only with a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, with both manual and automatic transmission options. The company may even offer a CNG version of this engine to bank on the growing demand for this fuel option in the segment.

Renault may offer the mini-Duster with ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems, and a range of other premium features to ensure competitiveness in the segment. In addition to the Tata Nexon, the mini-Duster will compete with the Hyundai Venue, Kia Syros, and Skoda Kylaq, as well as the Mahindra Vision S concept’s production version and a VW compact SUV, both scheduled to hit the showrooms in 2027.
The mini-Duster could arrive in early 2028 and be priced from around 8 lakh rupees (ex-showroom). Renault will likely manufacture it exclusively in India and may export it to many emerging markets.
