New rugged compact SUVs from Tata Motors, Mahindra, and Renault to be designed and engineered to take advantage of the lowest GST rates of 18% and 5%

Rugged SUVs such as the Mahindra Thar series, the Mahindra Scorpio, and the Toyota Fortuner have been consistently gaining traction over the years. Noticing this trend, some automakers are working on implementing this formula for smaller and more affordable models. Three new rugged compact SUVs are in the works for the Indian market, all planned to be priced from well under Rs. 10 lakh (ex-showroom):

1. Mahindra Vision S

The first of these rugged compact SUVs to arrive in showrooms will be the production version of the Mahindra Vision S concept, scheduled to be launched in 2027. It will have an authentic SUV character with a high ride height, a squarish body, and details such as a high-set, flattish bonnet, muscular wheel arches and rocker panels, and raised roof rails.

Mahindra Vision S (3)

Mahindra is developing this model on its future NU_IQ multi-energy platform. While it has not confirmed a pure electric powertrain option yet, this platform keeps the door open. Spy shots have confirmed premium features such as a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, a digital instrument cluster, and a large touchscreen infotainment system. The company will likely launch this model in an ICE variant with petrol and diesel engines and roll out a hybrid variant later.

2. Renault Bridger

The Renault Briger, already showcased in a near-production concept version in Guyancourt, France, earlier this month, will mark the brand’s entry into the compact SUV segment in India. The company plans to launch it by the end of 2027.

renault bridger (9)

Based on a modified version of the all-new Duster’s platform, the Bridger is expected to be launched in an ICE variant with an all-new 1.2-litre naturally aspirated and 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engines. Renault is developing hybrid and pure electric variants as well, and should introduce them in a phased manner at a later stage.

3. Tata Scarlet

Tata Motors is developing a new SUV to challenge the Mahindra Thar, although this model will be more rugged in looks than in off-roading capability, being based on a monocoque platform. Codenamed ‘Tata Scarlet’, the new SUV will feature a boxy shape and should have a high ground clearance of around 210 mm.

The Tata Scarlet will be available in ICE and pure electric variants, and unlike in the former, customers will get an AWD drivetrain layout option in the latter. Tata Motors could launch it sometime in 2028, about a year after the next-gen Nexon.

Toyota, Tata, And VinFast To Launch New Electric Cars Soon

GaadiWaadi -

Tata Sierra EV

Three new electric cars, including a seven-seat model, expected to be launched in India in the next 2-3 months

Right in the beginning quarter of the new year, three new mass-market electric cars have already been launched in India: the Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, Maruti e Vitara, and the new Tata Punch.ev. Soon, three more affordable EVs are likely to be introduced, expected to be priced in Rs. 15-20 lakh (ex-showroom) in the base trim.

In the first half of April, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) is likely to launch the Urban Cruiser Ebella, which it revealed in January. The Urban Cruiser Ebella is the corporate cousin of Maruti Suzuki’s e Vitara but carries a more contemporary look that’s less about ruggedness and more about elegance. Sleek headlamps, a simpler bumper with cleaner surfacing, and a flatter bonnet are among the key design changes. The interior largely mirrors the donor model.

TKM will launch it with the same battery packs and motors. The base variant will have a 49 kWh LFP battery pack combined with a front-mounted motor producing 106 kW (142 hp) and 193 Nm of torque. The top variant will upgrade to a 61 kWh LFP battery pack and a more powerful motor generating 128 kW (172 hp) and 193 Nm of torque. The Urban Cruiser Ebella will be able to travel 440 kilometres on a single charge in the base variant and 543 kilometres in the top variant.

Towards the end of next month, Tata Motors will likely unveil the Sierra.ev, the pure electric variant of the all-new Sierra. The electric variant will feature a minimalist nose section for a more understated look, as well as unique 19-inch alloy wheels. A flat floor should make the interior even more spacious and comfortable.

Tata Motors will likely offer the Sierra.ev in single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD variants and give a choice of two battery packs. The company could be targeting a range of up to around 650 kilometres. It may launch the Sierra.ev sometime in May.

VinFast will likely launch the VF 7 MPV, its all-electric Toyota Innova rival, in the second quarter. The VF 7 MPV measures 4,740 mm in length, 1,872 mm in width, and 1,734 mm in height and has a 2,840 mm wheelbase. The seven-seater has a single motor producing 150 kW (201 hp) and 280 Nm of torque and a 60.13 kWh LFP battery pack, and according to NEDC, this configuration is expected to deliver a range of 450 kilometres.

Mahindra Vision S Compact SUV (Mini Scorpio N) In The Works – What To Expect?

GaadiWaadi -

Production-Spec-Mahindra-Vision-S-Baby-Scorpio-N-Rendered.jpg

Mahindra Vision S based compact SUV is expected to be slotted above the XUV 3XO upon arrival sometime next year in India

Mahindra & Mahindra is expanding its SUV portfolio with a new compact offering based on the Vision S concept. It is expected to arrive around 2027 and will certainly be positioned between the XUV 3XO and the Scorpio N in the brand’s product portfolio as it could compete against the likes of upcoming Renault Bridger and Kia Syros.

To Power this five-seater SUV, Mahindra will more likely use engines from the XUV 3XO lineup including a 1.2-litre TGDi turbocharged petrol unit producing around 131 hp and 230 Nm along with a 1.5-litre diesel delivering close to 117 hp and 300 Nm. Transmission options could include a six-speed manual and a torque converter automatic with an AMT expected for select diesel variants.

In terms of design, recent test mules indicate an apparent visual link to the Scorpio N but in a more compact form. The SUV is expected to feature a boxy and upright stance, thick pillars, angular window lines, flared wheel arches and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel. Under the skin, the model will sit on Mahindra’s new NU_IQ unibody platform.

Mahindra Vision S (4)

It will be a shift away from the brand’s traditional ladder frame construction and it goes without saying that it will be heavily localised. The new architecture is being developed to support a range of future utility vehicles while enabling better packaging and it made its debut alongside four vehicle concepts including the Vision S concept.

On the inside, features such as a touchscreen infotainment system, panoramic sunroof, cruise control and rear armrest in higher trims are possible while mid variants could get a semi-digital instrument cluster and essential features found in typical Mahindra SUVs. Despite its tough styling, the SUV will have more compact proportions than the Scorpio N and it will be high on practicality as well as the cabin space and boot volume could be amongst the key highlights.

Mahindra Vision S (3)

The Vision S-based SUV will play an integral part in shaping Mahindra’s future product strategy which also includes new body styles like a pickup derived from the Scorpio N and an electric SUV inspired by the Thar Roxx.
