Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has emerged as the best alternative fuel choice in the Indian market. The sales of CNG vehicles even surpassed diesel ones for the first time in FY25. The reasons behind the rise in sales of CNG-powered vehicles are quite simple: they are affordable, fuel efficient and environment friendly. In the last couple of years, we have seen more and more auto brands moving towards this fuel and introducing the CNG versions of their existing petrol and diesel models. 1. Skoda Kylaq CNG

Presently, Skoda Kylaq is the highest-selling model for the European brand with monthly sales close to 5000 units. Recently, Ashish Gupta – Brand Director for Skoda India, stated that the Kylaq CNG is under consideration but it will not happen immediately. Sources close to the development told us that the company is currently evaluating whether its turbo petrol engine can work with CNG fuel or not. Skoda Kylaq is priced in a range of Rs 8.25-13.99 lakh (ex-showroom) in the Indian market.

2. Tata Curvv CNG

Last month, Tata Curvv CNG was spotted testing for the first time around Pune. It is on the verge of becoming only the second passenger vehicle in India to come with all four fuel options namely petrol, diesel, CNG and EV after Tata Nexon. Needless to state, the Curvv CNG will be offered with Tata’s twin-cylinder technology which we have already seen in the CNG versions of Nexon, Altroz and Tiago.

Tata Curvv CNG will directly rival Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, both of which come with the conventional single-cylinder setup. It is likely to launch during the festive season of Diwali (Oct-Nov) later this year. The CNG variants could be around Rs 1 lakh more expensive than their petrol counterparts. Besides the standard manual gearbox, we might see an automatic transmission too as an option.

3. Kia Carens CNG

Kia India will launch its first CNG powered vehicle in the form of the Carens Clavis by the end of 2025. It was confirmed by Hardeep Singh Brar = Senior Vice President & Head of Sales and Marketing, during a media interaction. Kia Carens Clavis CNG will be at loggerheads with Maruti Suzuki Ertiga in the Indian market.

“As CNG volumes are increasing, we are working on the CNG option as well. But we want to make sure that when we give a CNG option, like all our products, it has to be the best CNG car. If our testing proves to be successful, we will bring it (in the Carens),” said Brar.

Affordably Priced Kylaq Dominates Skoda’s Sales In May 2025

Skoda’s first sub-4 metre model in India since the Fabia becomes its new best-selling product mainly thanks to its affordable pricing

Skoda’s sales in India have reached a whole new level since it launched the Kylaq. Although not as good as the record-breaking March 2025, May 2025 was quite a decent month for the Czech automaker, all thanks to the new sub-4 metre SUV.

The Kylaq was unsurprisingly Skoda’s best-selling model in India in May 2025. The company delivered 4,949 units of the small SUV last month, far more than any of its other models. The Hyundai Venue rival accounted for 73% of the brand’s total sales in May 2025, which stood at 6,740 units.

For the record, a year ago when Skoda didn’t have the Kylaq in showrooms yet its sales were less than half of last month. In May 2024, the company had sold just 2,884 cars, meaning it recorded a year-over-year growth of 134% (3,856 units) last month.

While the Kylaq registered 4,949 units in sales in May 2025, Skoda’s other mass-market, locally manufactured models in India sold in three-digit figures. The Slavia contributed 937 units, marking a year-over-year decline of 39% (May 2024: 1,538 units). The Kushaq saw an even bigger year-over-year decline of 44%, registering just 644 units in May 2025, compared to 1,157 units in the same month last year.

The Kyaq is Skoda’s first sub-4 metre model since the Fabia in 2013. The company offers it exclusively with a 1.0-litre TSI turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine, tuned to produce 85 kW (114 hp) and 178 Nm of torque. It gives customers a choice of two transmissions: 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic. The small SUV delivers a fuel economy of 19.68 km/l with the former and 19.05 km/l with the latter.

Skoda offers the Kylaq with exterior features like LED projector headlamps, LED fog lamps with (static) cornering function, 17-inch alloy wheels, and LED tail lamps. Interior highlights include an electric sunroof, 6-way power front seats with a ventilation function, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto,  and a wireless smartphone charger.

On the safety front, Skoda offers features like six airbags, hill hold control, electronic stability control, traction control system, and a reverse camera. The Kylaq’s ex-showroom prices start at 8.25 lakh rupees.

The Thoothukudi manufacturing plant, VinFast’s third after Vietnam and the U.S., spans 400 acres and is designed to produce up to 150,000 EVs annually. The facility will create around 3,500 direct jobs and is expected to play a key role in making India a strategic export and production hub. VinFast has also pledged to adopt green manufacturing practices in alignment with India’s sustainability goals.

Mahindra Evaluates Hybrid Options Across ICE & EV Platforms Amid Shifting Market Trends

Mahindra explores hybrid tech across ICE and EVs amid EV adoption slowdown

Mahindra is shifting gears to adapt to evolving consumer preferences and market conditions by exploring hybrid powertrains for both its internal combustion engine and born-electric vehicle platforms. The move marks a strategic deviation from the automaker’s earlier position of pursuing an EV-only future and aligns with a broader industry trend where hybrids are gaining traction amid infrastructure challenges and cost considerations.

As EV adoption in India has not accelerated at the anticipated pace, Mahindra is now actively developing hybrid technology to complement its current ICE and electric offerings. In May 2025, the company sold 2604 electric vehicles—primarily from its born-EV range. However, with a goal of reaching 5000 monthly EV sales, Mahindra is supplementing its strategy with hybrid alternatives to close the gap.

For its ICE models, Mahindra is reportedly working on a series-hybrid system, which relies on an internal combustion engine to generate electricity, powering electric motors that drive the wheels. Meanwhile, the company is also considering a range-extender hybrid setup for its EVs. This system employs a small petrol engine—likely a 1.2-litre unit—as a generator to charge the battery, thus extending the vehicle’s range without directly powering the wheels.

A notable development within Mahindra’s hybrid roadmap is the introduction of a strong hybrid version of the XUV 3XO. Unlike the range-extender format being considered for BEVs, the XUV 3XO will feature a series-parallel hybrid layout. This allows both the combustion engine and electric motor to operate either independently or together, optimising fuel efficiency and performance.

The increased interest in hybrids isn’t limited to Mahindra. Maruti Suzuki is also developing affordable range-extender hybrid systems for models such as the Fronx, Baleno, Swift and an upcoming MPV. Other automakers, including Hyundai, Skoda-Volkswagen and JSW MG, are also preparing hybrid entries for the Indian market.

The push toward hybridisation comes at a time when the Indian government is offering incentives such as road tax exemptions for hybrid vehicles in select states. While EVs slightly outpaced hybrids in annual sales last year—with a market share of 2.4% compared to hybrids’ 2.1%—the growing hybrid sales figures and ongoing infrastructure limitations suggest a more balanced mix of powertrain technologies in the near future.

Globally, electrification targets are also being reassessed. The EU’s 2035 zero-emission mandate is facing reconsideration, and in the U.S., shifting political dynamics signal continued support for ICE vehicles. These factors contribute to the industry’s collective reassessment of the transition timeline toward full electrification.

As Mahindra adapts its strategy, the company positions itself to meet customer demands more effectively while navigating the evolving regulatory and market landscape.

Renault Kiger & Triber Facelift Spotted Ahead of Launch

Renault’s Kiger and Triber facelifts bring design upgrades, launch due this year

Renault is preparing to launch refreshed versions of Kiger and Triber later this year. Recent spy shots suggest that both models are set to receive significant visual updates, including redesigned front and rear styling elements, new alloy wheel designs and reworked tail lamps. These changes are part of Renault’s broader strategy to update its lineup, which includes the introduction of five new models over the next two years.

Inside the cabin, both vehicles are expected to see substantial upgrades, possibly drawing inspiration from its international siblings. While the Triber continues with its familiar 5+2 seating layout, a notable revision is the apparent removal of the middle occupant’s headrest.

Mechanically, both models will retain their existing powertrains. The 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine will continue to serve both the Kiger and Triber, while the Kiger will also retain its 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol option. Transmission options remain the same: a 5-speed manual for both, with an AMT for the NA petrol and a CVT for the turbo petrol variant.

These facelifts are expected to lay the groundwork for the arrival of the next-generation Duster, slated for early 2026. Renault’s future plans also include launching a new three-row vehicle and a premium electric vehicle by 2027.

Top 10 Sedans May 2025 – Dzire, Aura, Amaze, Slavia, City, Camry

In a month marked by uneven fortunes for sedans in India, May 2025 saw the Maruti Suzuki Dzire comfortably holding onto its crown in the segment, even as several others tumbled under the weight of shrinking demand. The overall outlook is certainly grim barring a few bright spots which offered brief resistance to a clear year-on-year decline trend.

At the top of the chart, the Dzire remained in a league of its own, recording a 13 per cent year-on-year increase and moving 18,084 units in May compared to 16,061 during the same period last year. It was also the most sold passenger vehicle in India last month as the arrival of the new generation late last year certainly helped pump up volumes.

In second place, Hyundai’s Aura showed healthy traction with an 18 per cent climb, ending the month at 5,225 units – up from 4,433. Meanwhile, Honda’s Amaze continued to be in third but not without a dip of 10 per cent over the previous year, closing at 1,998 units despite receiving a brand new model around the same time as the Dzire.

The Volkswagen Virtus followed next, and although volumes remained modest, the midsize sedan registered a 10 per cent gain over last year, reaching 1,707 units in May. The decline deepened from there as Tata’s Tigor, which once sat higher in the sub-four-metre sedan space, saw its numbers nearly halved with a sharp 49 per cent drop, moving only 1,076 units compared to 2,098 in May 2024.

The once-strong Hyundai Verna could not hold up either, settling for just 930 units, down 33 per cent year-on-year. The Skoda Slavia didn’t fare much better as its volume slipped 16 per cent to just 937 units. The Honda City, a long-standing staple in the midsize space, saw sales crash by 53 per cent, dropping to 491 units.

The Ciaz from Maruti Suzuki could only pull 458 units in May, marking a 37 per cent fall from the previous year as it is heading into discontinuation phase. Rounding out the list, however, was an outlier: the Toyota Camry. Though still very niche in its footprint, the hybrid sedan showed surprising momentum, recording a 62 per cent surge year-on-year to reach 198 units – up from 122 units.
