SUV Sales See A Dip For The First Time In More Than Five Years

SUV sales in India decline for the first time since the pandemic, while MPVs interestingly witness an increase in demand

Long driven by aspirations of status and the need to tackle poor road infrastructure, SUV demand has surged over the past decade. But after years of uninterrupted growth, the boom appears to have finally slowed—or at least hit pause.

According to a report from ETAuto, SUV sales in India were in the red for the first time in over five years in June. Our market recorded approximately 175,000 units in SUV sales in that month, 2.1% lower than in the same month last year. A senior auto industry official anonymously said that SUV sales registered just a single-digit growth (5.6%) for the first time in many years in Q1 FY2026 (572,000 units).

JATO Dynamics data shows 171,341 mainstream SUVs and 3,660 luxury SUVs were sold in our market in June this year. Compared to January this year, demand for the former has fallen significantly, by 19%. For reference, 211,946 units were delivered in the first month of the year, 40,605 units more than in June.

SUV sales are certainly moderating, and now the only thing that remains to be seen is the level at which they normalise. However, the slowdown in SUV sales shouldn’t be considered as a sign of declining popularity of the body style in its entirety. Major layoffs in the IT sector, geopolitical uncertainties, and macro challenges are also responsible. While the demand for SUVs is plateauing, MPVs are witnessing an uptick, as per the report.

Dwindling SUV sales might just be a blip on the radar rather than an actual change in the consumer trend. In fact, a slew of highly anticipated new launches are coming by next year, which could bring excitement back to the segment. Tata Motors is set to revive the legendary Sierra and launch a first-ever Sierra.ev at the end of this year. Maruti Suzuki will introduce a new Hyundai Creta rival on a budget, allegedly called the Escudo.

In 2026, Mahindra plans to launch the next-gen Bolero in an all-new, proper SUV character and also the facelifted Thar and facelifted XUV700. Another major blockbuster next year will be the next-gen Kia Seltos. Renault has scheduled two major SUV launches – the third-gen Duster and a three-row SUV, with the latter rumoured to be a derivative of the Boreal. Nissan will launch the mechanical cousins of at least the latter, if not both, in the same year. These are just a few of many new SUVs coming to our market by next year, which could once again drive up SUV demand.

GaadiWaadi -

Maruti-Suzuki-Fronx-ADAS.jpg

Maruti Suzuki is expected to launch the Fronx Hybrid in India with a smart hybrid system while more new models are in the pipeline too

The affordable compact car segment is dominated by ICE petrol and diesel models, followed by a few electric vehicles. Currently, there are no hybrid options available in the sub-4-meter segment; however, the situation is going to change with the launch of new hybrid cars from Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra. Let’s look at the upcoming affordable compact hybrid cars in India.

1. Maruti Suzuki Fronx Hybrid

The hybrid setup will employ the familiar 1.2-litre Z12E petrol engine and it could be a smart hybrid system before the arrival of an in-house developed unit with higher fuel efficiency.  Alongside the new powertrain, the updated Fronx could likely feature a revised exterior design, refreshed interiors and more features in the future.

Mahindra is currently developing a new strong hybrid powertrain for the XUV3XO. Internally codenamed S226, it will be the brand’s first hybrid model in the Indian market. Expected to hit the roads sometime next year, the XUV3XO will employ the familiar 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine mated with the strong hybrid setup. For reference, the XUV3XO is currently available with petrol and diesel engines, while the all-electric version is also on the cards.

3&4. Maruti Suzuki Baleno & Swift Hybrid

After the launch of the Fronx hybrid in India, Maruti Suzuki will expand its HEV series hybrid portfolio, with the next-gen Baleno and Swift being the next in line models to get an electrified ICE powertrain. Reportedly, the new-gen Baleno, which is due for a launch next year, will get the same range-extended hybrid technology, employing the familiar 1.2-litre Z12E petrol engine. Internally codenamed YTA, the upcoming premium hatchback will deliver much better claimed fuel efficiency numbers.

5 All-New Hyundai Creta Rivals To Be Launched Within A Year

GaadiWaadi -

Dacia Duster

Here are the 5 all-new models set to bring a whole new excitement to the mid-size SUV segment in India by next year

The competition in India’s hotly contested mid-size SUV segment, currently led by the Hyundai Creta, is set to get even more intense by next year. Five all-new models are set to be launched within the next twelve months, giving customers even an even wider pool of choices.

1. Maruti Escudo

New-Gen Grand Vitara (1)

Not to be confused with the global Suzuki Vitara sold in Japan, the Maruti Vitara will be an all-new model based on the same platform as the Maruti Grand Vitara. Internally known by the codename Maruti Y17, it will be positioned lower in the line-up and be sold through Arena dealerships. It is expected to be slightly longer than the Maruti Grand Vitara, as it was originally conceived as a seven-seat model and later re-engineered into a five-seater. The larger dimensions should still lead to one advantage – extra boot space.

2. Tata Sierra

Sierra SUV

The Tata Sierra is returning to showrooms after two decades, and this time around, it will be a five-door model. It will debut the company’s two brand-new petrol engines, one of which will be a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated unit and the other a 1.5-litre turbocharged direct injection unit. Another highlight would be a passenger touchscreen, a feature the company hasn’t offered in any of its cars so far. There would be an all-electric Tata Sierra.ev as well, and Tata Motors plans to launch it before the ICE model, suggesting that the latter has been derived from the former and not the other way around.

3. Renault Duster

2024 renault duster-11

The Renault Duster is coming back to India in its third generation, featuring an all-new upscale design while still preserving its robust and brawny roots. Based on the CMF-B LS platform, the all-new model is expected to be offered with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder and 1.3-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engines at launch. A hybrid variant is said to follow within a year of launch, which will be the brand’s first electrified offering in our market.

4. Next-gen Kia Seltos

New Kia Seltos

The Kia Seltos will embody the brand’s new ‘Opposites United’ design language in its second generation. The next-gen Seltos (codename: SP3i) will be approximately 100 mm longer and offer more boot space. Kia is expected to offer it with an array of new advanced technologies, such as a hands-free power tailgate, the Trinity Panoramic Display running ccNC software, and ventilated rear seats. The engine and transmission choices are likely to be the same as the current model. However, a first-ever hybrid variant could follow sometime in 2027.

5. Nissan Terrano successor

The third-gen Renault Duster will have a corporate cousin from Nissan, expected to arrive a month or two later. Local testing of this model has just commenced, and unlike its predecessor, the Terrano, it will feature a unique exterior inspired by the seventh-generation Patrol full-size SUV. Substantial visual differences are expected on the inside, too, although that’s where the distinctiveness would end. The engine line-up is likely to be the same as the all-new Renault Duster, and similarly, it should gain a hybrid variant within a year of launch.

Electric Two-Wheeler Sales July 2025 – TVS, Bajaj, Ola, Hero, Ather

GaadiWaadi -

The overall electric two-wheeler sales tally stood at 1,02,973 units in July 2025, registering a negative growth of 4.25% over the previous year

The electric two-wheeler segment is slowly gaining traction in the Indian market, and the overall growth over the past few years is quite encouraging for the manufacturers. In the month of July 2025, electric two-wheeler sales stood at 1,02,973 units, thereby registering a YOY de-growth of 4.25% over the previous year. This reflects the tapering demand for electric two-wheelers in the country.

TVS Motor Company stood at the top spot in July 2024 by selling 22,256 units, registering a 13.23% YOY growth. Trailing behind is Bajaj Auto with 19,683 units in the bag, a good 10.80% growth over the previous year. TVS and Bajaj have been maintaining the lead for the past few months, leaving behind the new EV start-ups, which were once market leaders.

Ola Electric acquired the third spot in the domestic sales tally, with the sales bar standing at 17,852 units. This accounts for a massive 57.29% YOY decline (41,802 units in July 2024) in sales, the highest for any EV brand in India.

Next Gen Mahindra Bolero Caught Testing Again Inside & Out

GaadiWaadi -

Next-Gen-Mahindra-Bolero-Caught-Testing-Again-Inside-Out.jpg

Next gen Mahindra Bolero is expected to go on sale in the coming months and it will get a brand new exterior and interior

By the middle of this month, Mahindra & Mahindra is gearing up to unveil four new concept models alongside an all-new platform. The highly anticipated next generation Bolero could share the spotlight during this reveal but it has not been officially announced yet. It is worth noting that road trials for the updated XUV700 are also underway with its market debut scheduled for early 2026.

Focussing on the new Bolero, it has been caught testing again in India in its close-to-production guise. The prototype’s front end keeps the MUV’s familiar upright stance complemented by its slightly swooping bonnet and squared off wheel arches. Its redesigned grille carries vertical slats and circular LED headlamps with DRLs sitting on either side – keeping in line with the retro modern theme found in other models.

Other highlights are new dual-tone alloy wheels and pronounced body cladding around the arches pointing toward a tougher yet look. Inside, though still under partial camouflage, the SUV reveals a steering wheel likely lifted from the Mahindra Scorpio N. The dashboard appears reworked to accommodate a touchscreen infotainment unit while a revised centre console design will also be available.

At present, the Bolero Neo is powered by a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder diesel engine mated to a manual gearbox, delivering roughly 99 bhp. For its upcoming generation, Mahindra will more likely to swap this setup for the four-cylinder 1.5-litre diesel already found in the Thar three-door and XUV 3XO. This updated powertrain is expected to provide not only higher performance but also better overall drivability.

The next generation Bolero is expected to slot a bit above the current Bolero Neo which could prompt Mahindra to introduce a fresh suffix. With the Bolero nameplate enjoying over two decades of consistent demand, it is highly probable that the present iteration will continue to be sold alongside the upcoming model.

The forthcoming body-on-frame SUV, as mentioned before, may take on multiple midsize monocoque SUVs, matching them not only in road presence but also in market competitiveness.

2 New Hyundai Hybrid SUVs In The Works For India – All Key Details

GaadiWaadi -

2022 Hyundai Tucson Review 4

The next-gen Hyundai Creta and an all-new premium three-row SUV positioned above Alcazar could get a strong hybrid powertrain

At the BMGE 2025 in Delhi, Hyundai marked a major step in its electric journey with the debut of the Creta Electric. This new entrant played a crucial role in pushing the Creta lineup to record-breaking monthly sales earlier this year. The brand is now planning to bring in a number of electrified offerings including hybrids.

Internally codenamed SX3, the fourth generation Creta is being developed by the Korean brand and is slated for a 2027 launch. Production for the upcoming model will remain at the company’s Tamil Nadu facility. While the new iteration is expected to bring notable updates in both design and features, the current engine and transmission configurations could be retained.

A strong hybrid petrol engine could emerge as one of the major taking points in the next generation Creta. Alongside this, Hyundai is also readying a new premium SUV to slot between the Tucson and Alcazar. The forthcoming model will be manufactured at the company’s Talegaon facility which will begin operations next year.

Codenamed Ni1i, the SUV is being prepared to take on established rivals like the Tata Safari, MG Hector Plus and Mahindra XUV700 and it could be sold in both six- and seven-seater layouts. For customers focused on fuel efficiency, the adoption of a strong hybrid powertrain may offer a viable alternative to traditional petrol and diesel units.

In the Rs. 18 lakh to 30 lakh SUV bracket, Hyundai’s upcoming model could intensify market rivalry especially against the Mahindra XUV700 as it is available in an expansive range but we will have to wait and see what really happens. Drawing inspiration from the Chinese long wheelbase Tucson, which stretches to 4.68 metres, the brand may position it as a roomier choice compared to the Alcazar.
