Toyota posted total domestic sales of 30,630 units in January 2026 with the Innova range leading the way ahead of Hyryder and Glanza

Toyota Kirloskar Motor registered total sales of 30,630 units last month with a healthy 17 per cent year-on-year growth compared to 26,178 units sold in January 2025. However, on a month-on-month basis, volumes declined by 10 per cent against 34,159 units recorded in December 2025. The performance was orchestrated by consistent demand for premium SUVs and MPVs.

The Innova Crysta and Innova Hycross combined to remain as Toyota’s best-selling nameplate with 9,455 units in January 2026. Despite leading the portfolio, the MPV duo saw a slight 3 per cent YoY decline compared to 9,780 units during the same period last year. On a monthly basis, sales were down 5 per cent from 9,901 units in December.

The Urban Cruiser Hyryder emerged as one of the biggest growth drivers for the brand. Toyota sold 9,156 units of the midsize SUV last month with a huge 85 per cent YoY surge over 4,941 units in January 2025. Compared to 7,022 units in December 2025, the Hyryder posted a notable 30 per cent MoM growth due to the good reception for its mild-hybrid and strong hybrid versions.

Hyundai Model Wise Jan 2026 Sales – Creta, Venue, Aura, i10, i20, Exter

GaadiWaadi -

Hyundai Creta (2)

Hyundai posted 59,107 units in the month of January 2026 as its numbers were up 9 per cent as against 54,003 units

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) sold a domestic total of 59,107 units in the month of January 2026 as its numbers were up 9 per cent on a year-on-year basis. SUVs are holding volumes while entry-level cars are rebounding slightly but some more upmarket models continue to face decline. The Hyundai Creta registered 17,921 units – down 3 per cent YoY when compared to the same month last year.

With 12,413 units, the Hyundai Venue grew 12 per cent YoY – showing that sub-4m SUVs remain a sweet spot and the arrival of the new generation recently has found good takers. Buyers who find the Creta expensive or oversized for their liking are walking into Venue showrooms as it boasts wide engine options and modern features list.

The Aura was the real surprise as it finished third in the sales standings with a total of 7,978 units as against 5,388 units during the corresponding period twelve months ago with a volume surge of 48 per cent and the same can be said for the most affordable Hyundai car currently on sale in India, the Grand i10 Nios.

The compact hatchback posted a tally of 7,710 units with a 45 per cent growth. The growth appears to be driven by price-sensitive buyers returning to petrol sedans and hatchbacks, especially in Tier-2 and Tier-3 markets. Taxi and fleet demand might have also picked up for both models. The i20, on the other end, garnered 5,677 unit sales with a 20 per cent YoY growth.

The Exter slipped to sixth with a 7 per cent YoY courtesy of the total of 5,621 units last month as against 6,068 units. Down the line, the Alcazar three-row SUV posted 962 units as against 1,310 units with a YoY decline of 27 per cent. The Verna, which is due a facelift soon, managed a total of 823 units as against 1,477 units with a de-growth of 44 per cent.

China To Mandate Mechanical Car Door Handles From 2027

2026 Kia Seltos Price

China mandates mechanical car door handles to improve vehicle safety

China has announced new vehicle safety regulations that will effectively phase out fully concealed or electrically dependent car door handles from 2027. The move makes China the first country to introduce nationwide rules targeting the increasingly popular “hidden” door handle design seen on several modern electric vehicles.

The design, popularised globally by Tesla and adopted by multiple Chinese automakers including Xiaomi, typically relies on electronic actuation. These handles deploy automatically via a key fob, smartphone command or light touch, rather than remaining permanently exposed. While visually sleek and aerodynamically efficient, the system has faced growing scrutiny over safety concerns.

Under the revised technical standards issued by China’s industry ministry, all new vehicles will be required to feature both exterior and interior mechanical door handles. While electrically operated systems can continue to be offered, a physical mechanical release mechanism will become mandatory. Authorities have also laid down specifications governing handle placement and functionality to ensure doors can be opened in emergency situations. Interior handles must be clearly visible and easily accessible.

The updated regulations will apply to newly approved vehicle models starting January 1, 2027. Existing models already on sale will be required to comply by January 1, 2029.

Concerns around concealed handles have surfaced in multiple markets. In the United States, regulators previously initiated a review related to emergency door release mechanisms in the Tesla Model 3. In China, state media reported a fatal crash involving a Xiaomi SU7 Ultra in which bystanders were reportedly unable to access the vehicle quickly after the accident. While investigations and official clarifications remain limited, such incidents have contributed to broader debate about emergency accessibility in vehicles with electronically operated handles.

China’s decision reflects a growing regulatory focus on functional safety, particularly as electric vehicles introduce increasingly complex electronic systems. The policy aims to ensure that, regardless of technological innovation, a reliable mechanical method for exiting a vehicle remains available in the event of power failure or collision.
