If you’re a regular follower of the automotive industry, you may have come across reports about the arrival of the new Maruti 7-seater SUV based on the Grand Vitara. Interestingly, the model that was initially considered a three-row SUV will, in fact, be a new midsize 5-seater SUV from Maruti Suzuki. While the name and details of the product are still under the wraps, it’s expected to be named ‘Maruti Escudo’. Now, let’s take a look at the top 5 key details we know so far about this upcoming Maruti SUV – codenamed Maruti Y17.
Hybrid Powertrain
The Maruti Escudo will share its platform and powertrains with the Grand Vitara, which is available with the 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol and 1.5L hybrid options. The petrol engine delivers a maximum power output of 103bhp, paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox. The strong hybrid setup offers a combined power of 79bhp and 141Nm of torque, when paired with an e-CVT gearbox.

Bigger than Brezza, Longer than Grand Vitara
Dimensionally, the new Maruti Y17 will be larger than the Brezza sub-4 metre SUV. In fact, it could be slightly longer than the Grand Vitara, which measures 4,345mm in length. Its length is expected to fall between 4,330mm – 4,365mm. The boot space of the Escudo might also be slightly bigger than the Grand Vitara, which offers a cargo volume of 373-litres.
Arena Exclusive
Unlike the Grand Vitara, which is retailed via Nexa premium network, the new Maruti Escudo (Maruti Y17) will be sold through Arena dealerships. This indicates that the company aims to attract a wider section of buyers with relatively affordable pricing. However, it might miss out on some of the premium features available in the Grand Vitara.
Launch Date & Positioning
The Escudo 5-seater SUV will go on sale in India during 2025 Diwali season, possibly between September – October. In Maruti Suzuki’s SUV lineup, the Maruti Y17 will sit above the Brezza and below the Grand Vitara.
Expected Price
It would be quite early to comment on its pricing. However, the Maruti Escudo is expected to cost more or less similar to the Grand Vitara. The entry-level petrol variant might be offered at Rs 10 – 11 lakh, while the fully-loaded hybrid variant could be priced around Rs 20 lakh.
