Vietnamese automaker to enter India with its premium electric cars and position itself as a premium brand in the first phase of operations
VinFast has revealed its final plans to enter India’s small but fast-growing electric car market. The company has announced its first products and various other details for the first phase of Indian operations.
Like most international automakers, VinFast has decided on a top-down approach for its Indian operations. The company isn’t going to tap extremely pricey segments with models like the VF 9 or VF 8, though. Those EVs are aimed primarily at Western markets like the U.S. and European countries.
Initially, VinFast will bring the VF 7 and VF 6 to Indian showrooms, which belong to the same segments as the Tata Harrier.ev and Hyundai Creta Electric, respectively. According to a report from The Times of India, the company will start accepting bookings for both models later this month. It will start selling the VF 7 first and then commence deliveries of the VF 6. Expect first shipments towards the end of this quarter or early next quarter.

The VF 7 measures 4,545 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,636 mm in height and has a 2,840 mm wheelbase. It is available in two configurations in Vietnam, one with a 130 kW (174 hp)/250 Nm front motor and one with a 150 kW (201 hp)/310 Nm front motor. The former has a 59.6 kWh battery pack and the latter a 70.8 kWh battery pack, delivering a range of 498 km and 496 km, respectively.
At 4,241 mm long, 1,834 mm wide, and 1,580 mm tall, the VF 6 is much smaller. The Hyundai Creta Electric rival has a 2,730 mm wheelbase. In Vietnam, it is available with two front motor options, one producing 130 kW (174 hp) and 250 Nm of torque and one producing 150 kW (201 hp) and 310 Nm of torque. A 59.6 kWh battery pack is standard and it delivers a range of 480 km with the former and 460 km with the latter.

VinFast plans to import completely knocked-down kits (CKDs) of the VF 6 and VF 7 from Vietnam and assemble them locally at its upcoming plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. Thus, both models are likely to be pricer than heavily localised competitors from legacy brands. The local plant will offer an annual production capacity of 50,000 units initially and be expandable to up to 1,50,000 units.
