Hyundai A+ Segment Electric SUV Confirmed For India

Hyundai to strengthen its position in the Indian electric car market with heavily localised electric micro-SUV, expected to be priced from around 10 lakh rupees (ex-showroom)

Hyundai has announced it will launch an A+ segment EV in India in 2027. The new electric car will be mainly aimed at the Tata Punch.ev, which is currently the only offering in this segment. After launching three global dedicated electric cars between 2021 and 2024, namely the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and Ioniq 9, Hyundai is working on regional models to further solidify its position in the EV space across key markets worldwide. In China, the company will launch the Elexio later this year and then a China-focused Elantra-segment sedan next year, while in Europe, it plans to launch the Ioniq 3 next year.

In India, Hyundai launched the Creta Electric in January, but this model has struggled to gain traction. In 2027, the company will launch an A+ segment model, a micro-SUV conceived from the outset for electric propulsion. In all likelihood, this will be the same car rumoured to be internally called the ‘HE1i EV.’

While earlier reports stated Hyundai would launch this model in the second half of 2026, it appears the company has postponed the timeline to 2027, seemingly a result of weakening consumer demand for EVs globally. Reports suggest the Hyundai HE1i will be inspired by the Hyundai Casper EV, called the Hyundai Inster in Europe. The exterior similarities may include mean split headlights and rear lights featuring pixel-like graphics, pillar-mounted rear door handles, and raised roof rails, although the design of these elements might be different.

Inside, a fully digital instrument cluster with customisable layouts, ventilated front seats, a wireless smartphone charger, and a large touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto could be the key features of the A+ segment EV. Here, too, Hyundai may use a different design, one that’s better aligned to the taste of Indian consumers.

The HE1i will likely be the first Hyundai taking advantage of the company’s tie-up with Exide Energy for locally produced LFP cells. The energy storage capacity of the battery pack comprising these LFP cells could be somewhere in the 35-40 kWh range. On a full charge, the A+ segment SUV should easily cover a distance of over 400 km. Whether Hyundai offers a smaller LFP battery pack aimed at customers who intend to use the car mainly or only in the city remains to be seen.

The Hyundai A+ segment EV will likely face competition from the Kia Syros EV as well, scheduled to arrive in early 2026. It could be a corporate cousin of the latter, utilising the same platform, powertrain, batteries, and other core components.
