New Creta Rival EVs

Manufactured in Hansalpur, Gujarat, the first EVs from Maruti Suzuki and Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) are already on sale in European markets

Maruti Suzuki and its long-term strategic partner, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), are all set to foray into EVs. Both Indo-Japanese joint ventures plan to launch a premium SUV as their first electric model.

Nearly a year ago at Auto Expo 2025, Maruti Suzuki unveiled the e Vitara, and that’s the model it plans to launch as its first EV. The company has already been exporting the e Vitara for several months now and recently held the car’s media drive in India, albeit without revealing a lot of key details.

The e Vitara is 4,275 mm long, 1,800 mm wide, and 1,640 mm tall, and has a 2,700 mm wheelbase. It will only be available in front-wheel drive, with a choice of two motors and two battery packs. The base variant’s motor will produce 105.8 kW (142 hp) and 192.5 Nm of torque and will be powered by a 49 kWh LFP battery pack.

The top variant’s motor will develop 128 kW (172 hp) and 192.5 Nm of torque and rely on a 61 kWh LFP battery pack. Maruti Suzuki has revealed 543 kilometres as the official range of this configuration. It has also confirmed features like 18-inch alloy wheels, a 10-way power driver’s seat, a 40:20:40-split sliding and reclining rear seat, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and seven airbags.

On 19 January, TKM will introduce the Toyota Urban Cruiser, a model already on sale internationally. The Urban Cruiser is a corporate cousin of Maruti Suzuki’s e Vitara, differentiated mainly by a hammerhead shark-inspired front end that looks much cleaner and classier.

The Urban Cruiser features a flatter and slightly shorter bonnet, sleek headlamps, and a visibly shorter functional grille. Vertical side air inlets in the bumper project confidence in a subtle manner. Compared to the e Vitara, a visibly larger area of the Urban Cruiser is covered by smooth panels for a more elegant styling.

Elsewhere, save for distinctive alloy wheels and different branding, the Urban Cruiser’s exterior is completely identical to the e Vitara. The interior is even more similar, with Toyota-specific branding being the only key difference. TKM will likely launch the e Urban Cruiser with the same battery packs and motors as Maruti Suzuki’s e Vitara, which should mean the same maximum range of 543 kilometres.
