Mahindra Pulls Off Incredible Formula E Victory In A Chaotic Tokyo Race

Nyck de Vries secured Mahindra Racing’s second Formula E victory of the season in Tokyo as the team closed to within a point of third in the Teams’ Championship

Mahindra Racing heads into the final round of the 2025/26 FIA Formula E World Championship with renewed momentum after collecting 38 points across the Tokyo double-header. Nyck de Vries delivered the team’s second victory of the campaign in Sunday’s rain-hit race while the result also meant Mahindra’s first season with multiple wins since 2017/18.

With 210 points, the team now sits just one point adrift of Andretti in the Teams’ standings ahead of the London finale. De Vries climbed to ninth in the Drivers’ standings while Edoardo Mortara retained fifth. The weekend could easily have produced an even bigger haul. Mortara demonstrated Mahindra’s qualifying pace by taking his fourth pole position of the season on Sunday – matching the Formula E record for the highest number of poles in a single campaign.

Earlier, the Swiss driver had topped both practice sessions before qualifying second for Saturday’s race. His fifth-place finish in the opening contest came after spending much of the race inside the leading group while de Vries’ afternoon unravelled almost immediately following a first-lap puncture that left him 17th at the flag.

Sunday’s race demanded a completely different approach. Rain forced the field to begin behind the Safety Car before changing track conditions quickly turned tyre pressure choices into one of the biggest deciding factors. Mahindra split its strategy across both cars with de Vries carrying a set-up better suited to a drying circuit. Amidst the decision dropped him backwards during the opening laps, it gradually became the quicker package as grip levels improved.

Mortara, on the other hand, initially controlled the race from pole before Antonio Felix da Costa moved ahead after activating the additional power boost on Lap 3. A later Full Course Yellow interrupted Mortara’s attempt to reclaim the lead after his own Attack Mode deployment and as the circuit continued to evolve, the Swiss driver gradually slipped down the order.

Further behind, de Vries steadily worked his way back into contention. A brief first Attack Mode deployment moved him closer to the leaders before a six-minute activation later in the race transformed his afternoon. With rivals on differing strategies, the Dutchman swept into the lead as the closing laps approached.

Mortara’s race ended moments later after he became caught in a multi-car incident triggering a red flag. The stoppage reduced the finish to a one-lap sprint, leaving de Vries to defend from Nick Cassidy and Jake Dennis. Despite Dennis carrying Attack Mode, de Vries absorbed the pressure and crossed the finish line for his sixth Formula E victory.
