The new global SUV will join Hyundai’s Indian lineup with the company set to reveal further details in the coming days
Hyundai Motor India has confirmed Bayon as the name of its upcoming SUV for the Indian market. The new global model will join the company’s existing SUV portfolio with additional details scheduled for announcement over the coming days. The Bayon name comes from Bayonne, a city in the French Basque Country.
Hyundai says the inspiration fits the character it wants to give the upcoming SUV with the name linked to the city’s distinctive identity and dynamic spirit. The company has also tied the name to its global design philosophy and the introduction of a new SUV developed for changing requirements in India.
Hyundai describes the Bayon as an “intelligent SUV” and says technology will sit at the centre of the product. The company has not specified the systems or features that will support that description yet. The announcement instead points to a focus on intuitive technology, design and customer interaction.

The Bayon will become a new addition to Hyundai’s Indian SUV lineup instead of replacing an existing nameplate based on the company’s announcement. Hyundai has not confirmed where the model will sit within its current range but we can expect it to slot above Venue and below Creta. Details regarding its body dimensions, seating configuration and mechanical package are also absent from the initial release.
The Bayon has already been spotted testing under the Bc4i codename and it could measure 4.18 metres in length. Spy images have pointed towards a quirky design with an upright and boxier body than the global Bayon, sleek lighting elements and DRLs, dual curved screen on the inside that could be shared with the Venue, etc. As for the performance, a new 1.2L turbo petrol and 1.0L turbo petrol unit could be utilised.
