Kia will introduce the Sorento as its new flagship SUV in India with its first hybrid powertrain alongside a diesel engine option
The Kia Sorento will launch in India tomorrow as the brand’s new flagship ICE SUV sitting above the Seltos. The model will also introduce Kia’s first hybrid powertrain for the Indian market while a diesel option will be offered alongside it. The company has already started production at its Anantapur facility in Andhra Pradesh ahead of the launch.
The hybrid powertrain will use a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine, an electric motor and a battery pack with a six-speed automatic transmission. The India-spec hybrid will get an all-wheel drive system while the global version produces 227 hp and 349 Nm. The diesel version will get a 2.2-litre turbocharged engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The seven-seat range will comprise HTE, HTE(O), HTK, and HTK(A) variants in FWD form while the AWD seven-seat range will add HTK(A) Black-line, HTX, HTX Black, HTX(A) and HTX(A) Black-line variants. The six-seat configuration will be available on HTK, HTK(A) and HTK(A) Black-line variants in FWD configuration while the AWD six-seat range will comprise HTX, HTX Black, HTX(A) and HTX(A) Black-line variants.
The Sorento will measure 4,815 mm in length and 1,900 mm in width while the wheelbase will stand at 2,815 mm. The exterior will follow Kia’s Opposites United design language while the front end will get a tall profile, vertically arranged lighting elements and a large grille. The body will feature squared proportions and pronounced wheel arches while flush-style door handles and vertically arranged rear lamps complete the exterior design.
The interior will get a dual-screen dashboard that combines two 12.3-inch displays while the equipment list will comprise a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front and second-row seats, powered seat adjustment, ambient lighting, wireless charging and a Bose audio system. The top-end variants will get captain seats for the second row while Kia’s AI Assistant and Kia Connect will be other highlights.
The safety package will compose Level 2 ADAS functions such as adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and highway driving assistance. The Sorento will also get a 360-degree camera, multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and other active and passive safety equipment. It will rival the Skoda Kodiaq, Toyota Fortuner, Jeep Meridian, MG Majestor, Volkswagen Tayron and MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV.
The colour range will consist Glacier White Pearl, Gravity Grey, Imperial Blue, Red, Pewter Olive, Ivory Silver Gloss, Aurora Black Pearl and Matte Graphite. The first seven colours will be available across HTE, HTE(O), HTK, HTK(A), HTX, and HTX(A) variants while Matte Graphite will be limited to HTX and HTX(A). The Kia Sorento is expected to start at around Rs. 35 lakh (ex-showroom).
