Hyundai’s upcoming compact EV will launch by Q4 FY27 with two battery options and more than 500 km of range on a single charge

Hyundai is developing a new compact EV for India that will sit below the Creta Electric and is expected to become the brand’s most affordable electric SUV in the country. Multiple test vehicles have already appeared on Indian roads and it has been confirmed to arrive in the final quarter of 2027 sitting right in the middle of the mass-market electric SUV segment.

The forthcoming Hyundai EV is expected to share substantial technology with the recently unveiled Kia Syros EV. It is available with 42 kWh and 51.4 kWh battery packs delivering ARAI-certified ranges of 443 km and 526 km respectively. Hyundai could use a similar strategy of dual battery options and the larger pack could give its compact e-SUV a certified range of more than 500 km.

Hyundai is also taking a different approach to the exterior design. As opposed to converting an existing ICE SUV, the company has developed a distinct styling for the electric model. The prototype has a tall stance comparable to the Venue while several styling details appear influenced by Hyundai’s global EVs. Sleek and segmented LED daytime running lights sit high on the front fascia with the main headlamp units positioned lower in the bumper.

The test vehicles have also revealed flush-fitting door handles, black roof rails and aerodynamic alloy wheels measuring around 16 inches. At the rear, the SUV gets a roof-mounted spoiler and vertically positioned reflectors. Heavy camouflage still conceals several design elements but the proportions and visible details indicate that Hyundai intends to give the compact EV its own styling approach.

The cabin is expected to receive a large touchscreen display which could sit alongside a fully digital instrument cluster. It will also feature connected car tech and Level 2 ADAS. The larger battery version could also support DC fast charging while battery thermal management, drive modes, regenerative braking and connected charging functions are expected too.

Hyundai could also offer a long list of comfort and safety features. The equipment may comprise wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, over-the-air software updates, wireless smartphone charging, ventilated front seats and a panoramic sunroof. A 360-degree camera, six airbags and assistive technologies are likely.

The compact electric SUV will enter a growing field of affordable EVs once it reaches the market. Its expected rivals will include the Tata Nexon EV, Tata Punch EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV and Kia Syros EV.
