New-Gen Grand Vitara

This article lists the 4 upcoming Hyundai Creta rival SUVs in India from key brands such as Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Renault among others

Hyundai Creta has single-handedly dominated the midsize SUV segment for last decade as it originally went on sale in July 2015 in the Indian market. For the last five consecutive years, it is the best-selling SUV model in India while also being Hyundai’s third best-selling car globally since 2019. In the coming 8-12 months, Hyundai Creta will get newer contenders from leading brands such as Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Renault among others. In this piece, we will talk in length about the 4 new Creta rival SUVs launching soon in the domestic market.

1. Maruti Escudo

Internally codenamed as Maruti Y17, it will be launched in the next 2-3 months in the Indian market. The Escudo will be slotted between the Brezza and Grand Vitara while sold via the regular Arena dealerships. The SUV has already been spotted testing multiple times and the spy-shots have confirmed a 5-seater layout, contrary to earlier reports that it will have a three-row, seven-seater configuration.

Several media reports claim that the Maruti Escudo will be longer in length than the Brezza to offer an extended boot capacity. For reference, Maruti Brezza measures under 4 metres in length to avail the subsidy benefits of the government. The Escuso will be equipped with the naturally aspirated 1.5L 4-cylinder petrol engine and mild hybrid technology to achieve an aggressive pricing.

2. Tata Sierra

Sierra SUV

It will not be an understatement to call it the biggest comeback in the Indian market. Discontinued nearly two decades back, Tata Sierra is returning to the Indian roads one more time during the festive season later this year. It will be offered with petrol and diesel engines. We have already seen the pre-production model at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Global Expo and the production-spec version is likely to be the same, barring a few subtle visual changes. Tata will also introduce an all-electric version of the Sierra SUV in the Indian market to rival the Creta EV.

3. Renault Duster

Often credited with the inception of the midsize SUV segment in India, Renault Duster is making a highly-anticipated return to the Indian shores in 2026 after a gap of more than four years. The new-gen Duster will be available with multiple engine options in the form of 1.0L petrol for base variants (Kiger-sourced), 1.3L turbocharged petrol and 1.6L petrol hybrid units. Quite interestingly, the Duster hybrid will be packed with two electric motors and a 1.2 kWh battery alongside the 1.6L petrol engine to achieve a combined power output of 140 bhp.

Nissan India recently confirmed that it will launch midsize SUV and MPV models in the Indian market by mid 2026. In fact, the brand had released the teaser images of both the upcoming models. As for the Nissan midsize SUV, it will be the rebranded version of the Duster. Several media reports claim that it could be christened as Kait, but no official word yet from Nissan on it. Apart from the appearance, it will share most of the stuff with the Duster such as features, engine and platform. We expect more details on the SUV in the coming months.

Maruti Suzuki e Vitara will go on sale around September 2025 and it will be sold via Nexa dealerships with two battery options

Maruti Suzuki is laying down an extensive plan to future-proof its service ecosystem as it inches closer to launching its first all-electric model, the e Vitara. Expecting the changing demands of EV ownership, the carmaker is targeting a total of 8,000 service touchpoints across India by FY31 – up from the current count of over 5,400.

To ensure readiness for electric mobility, over 1,500 workshops exclusively tailored to EVs are being introduced across the network. These centres will be staffed by technicians specifically trained to handle electric components and high voltage systems while also being outfitted with the equipment necessary for electric vehicle diagnostics and service procedures.

The carmaker’s vast reach already makes it India’s most widespread service provider. A recent benchmark saw Maruti Suzuki servicing 24.5 lakh vehicles within just one month – a testament to the its operational scale and footprint. The e Vitara is reportedly heading toward a market launch around September 2025 to capitalise on festive season furore.

Mahindra XUV700 Facelift2

Mahindra starts preparing for the first cosmetic update for its flagship ICE model, which mainly competes with the Tata Safari

Launched in September 2021, the Mahindra XUV700 is nearly four years old now. A mid-cycle refresh is in the works for the brand’s flagship ICE model, and many of the revisions coming with this update have already been revealed.

Mahindra has begun testing the facelifted XUV700 on public roads, and spy shots captured during this process have helped us understand some of the planned design changes. These images have shown the facelifted XUV700 featuring revised headlamps with dual U-shaped clusters and a new six-slot radiator grille.

One of the prototypes has been spotted with what appears to be a revised rear bumper with a new design for the reflectors. Additionally, we expect Mahindra to incorporate a new front bumper and use new 18-inch alloy wheels on the refreshed XUV700. The company will likely offer one or two new paint options as well.

Mahindra XUV700 Facelift1

Inside, the new Mahindra XUV700 could feature a revised dashboard design and a new colour scheme for a fresh look. A spy video that surfaced on the web recently has indicated that it will feature a triple-screen setup like the Mahindra XEV 9e. The third display could allow the front passenger to set or make changes to the route of navigation, watch videos, play games, and even make video calls, making their journeys fun and more engaging.

Mahindra currently offers the XUV700 with three engine options and two transmission choices, and it is expected to keep all of them unchanged with the facelift. A 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that 147 kW (197 hp) and 380 Nm of torque is the base option, linked to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The second option is a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine that develops 114 kW (153 hp) and 360 Nm of torque, married to a 6-speed manual transmission. The range-topping option is a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine that generates 136 kW (182 hp) and 420 Nm of torque if configured with a 6-speed manual transmission or the same power but 450 Nm of torque if specified with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The new Mahindra XUV700 is expected to be launched in early 2026 and could be priced from around INR 15 lakh (ex-showroom).

Innova, Hyryder And Glanza Contribute 72% Of Toyota’s Sales In May – 21K+ Units

GaadiWaadi -

Modified innova hycross3

Toyota India posted a strong sales growth in May 2025 with sales numbers close to 30k units in the domestic market

Toyota India became the fifth largest four-wheeler brand in the Indian market by retailing 29,280 units in May 2025. The biggest contributors in this success were the Innova, Hyryder and Glanza which accounted for nearly 72 percent of the overall sales numbers. The company sold more than 21k units of these three passenger vehicles last month in the domestic market. In particular, Toyota Hyryder registered its highest-ever monthly sales till date with 7573 units with a YoY growth of 94 percent (May 2024: 3906 units).

Toyota Innova has been the brand’s highest-selling model for the last so many years. In May 2025, the Japanese brand sold a total of 8882 units of the MPV in the Indian market against 8548 units in the same month last year. Though the YoY growth was minimal at 4 percent, these numbers were enough for Toyota to clinch the fifth spot in the list of top 10 OEMs in India.

Toyota Glanza, the rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, too had a decent outing with sales numbers of 4753 units in May 2025. It was the second best-selling model in the premium hatchback segment, surpassing the volumes of Hyundai i20 and Tata Altroz which stood at 4090 and 2779 units, respectively. Maruti Baleno was the top selling premium hatch with 11,618 units.

The rest of the Toyota models comprising of Taisor, Rumion, Fortuner, Camry, Vellfire and Hilux accounted for the rest of the sales of the brand in May 2025. While the Taisor maintained the momentum and recorded 3035 units, the Fortuner and Rumion sales numbers were not too bad at 2571 and 1917 units, respectively.

Toyota India had launched the Fortuner hybrid earlier this month in the Indian market. Priced at Rs 44.72 lakh (ex-showroom), it comes with a 48V battery which is paired with the 2.8L 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine. Toyota Fortuner hybrid also boasts of the new Smart Idle Start-Stop function to further improve the overall mileage of the SUV.

Being the rebadged version of the Maruti e-Vitara, it will be manufactured by Maruti Suzuki and supplied to Toyota, akin to the Glanza and Rumion.

Toyota Land Cruiser Gets 48V Hybrid Tech As Fortuner, India-Bound?

GaadiWaadi -

2025-toyota-land-cruiser-prado-250-hybrid.jpg

Toyota Land Cruiser Hybrid combines 2.8L turbo diesel engine with a new electric motor-generator, a lithium-ion 48V battery and a DC-DC converter

Toyota’s decision to integrate a 48V mild hybrid system into the Land Cruiser 250 indicates a notable mechanical evolution for the long-standing SUV in European markets. The Japanese auto major has introduced an electrified powertrain that enhances drivability on all types of surfaces while retaining critical off-road credentials such as a 700 mm wading depth.

The updated Land Cruiser combines Toyota’s 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine with a newly developed electric motor-generator, a lithium-ion 48V battery and a DC-DC converter. The MHEV setup contributes to more fluid acceleration, quieter start-stop operation and greater driving performance both on-road and off it according to the brand.

At the centrepiece of the system lies a permanent magnet synchronous motor-generator, taking the place of a traditional alternator. It provides regenerative braking functionality and supports smoother acceleration during stop and go driving. The harvested energy from deceleration is fed into the battery which supplies an additional 12 kW of power and 65 Nm of torque when needed, particularly at low speeds.

With just 7.6 kg of weight, the lithium-ion battery is packaged compactly under the deck, making minimal impact on load space. Cooling intake is drawn from the vehicle’s front rather than cabin air and a dedicated filter system prevents dust accumulation in demanding off-road conditions. High temperature resilience and water ingress protection further strengthen its durability.

The belt drive system has been reengineered to handle the demands of the hybrid setup in diesel applications. A two-arm belt tensioner maintains friction even when wet and aramid-reinforced construction are said to ensure durability under high loads. Bushings and dampers integrated into the mechanism help suppress vibration and noise during rugged use.

2025-toyota-land-cruiser-prado-250-hybrid.-1.jpg

Acceleration and deceleration are now smoother and more linear, giving the vehicle a composed feel in both city traffic and terrains. The motor-generator helps the engine restart almost instantly, even at higher revs, minimising driver fatigue in heavy congestion or while navigating steep gradients. A multi-information display allows the driver to control stop-start preferences based on driving conditions or AC usage.

Toyota has opted for a simpler hybrid integration strategy with the 48V setup allowing its use across existing models without substantial platform redesigns. Following its rollout in the Hilux and Fortuner, the Land Cruiser benefits from the same strategy – extending electrification without alienating traditional diesel customers.

Built on the TNGA-F ladder-frame platform, the latest Land Cruiser already brings increased structural rigidity. The hybrid system only strengthens this approach giving the SUV more stability and better on-road control as well as preserving off-road traits. Market availability for the new hybrid-powered Land Cruiser has begun across Europe with first customer deliveries expected by the end of 2025.

Next-Gen Hyundai Venue To Be Launched Around Festive Season

GaadiWaadi -

New Gen Venue

Hyundai working on a complete revamp for its Tata Nexon-rivaling sub-4 metre SUV well on time to keep it fresh and competitive in the market

The Hyundai Venue turned six years old last month, and in line with global product enhancement standards, it is set to be replaced by a new generation model soon. The next-gen Hyundai Venue is coming to Indian showrooms around the festive season this year, and it’ll pack some big changes.

Although it’ll be a new-generation model, the upcoming Venue could be based on the same platform as the current one, helping Hyundai keep development costs in check. Spy shots have revealed a familiar shape and character, albeit with new design bits all around.

The second-gen Hyundai Venue will flaunt a much more prominent front-end than the current model. The new look at the front will be inspired by the second-gen Hyundai Palisade, the brand’s flagship SUV that is said to be launched in India in 2028. Vertical headlamps with C-shaped DRLs and a massive radiator grille with a chain-like pattern will give it a more aggressive and dominating appearance.

On the sides, the next-gen Hyundai Venue will feature raised roof rails, sleeker mirrors, a straighter belt line, larger rear windows, and new 16-inch alloy wheels. At the rear, it will have new horizontal combination lamps with technical-looking three-point tail lights. Expect a more upmarket interior with a sleeker dashboard, larger displays, a new steering wheel, improved upholstery and decor elements, and a more ergonomic centre console. A panoramic sunroof and ventilated seats are likely to be offered in select grades.

The next-gen Venue might be based on the same platform but it could have enhanced structural reinforcements for improved safety. It should be available with a long list of Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems, a 360º camera system, and front and rear parking sensors to mitigate collisions. Six airbags will be part of the standard equipment in all the grades.

Hyundai should offer the next-gen Venue with the same 1.2-litre MPi petrol, 1.0-litre TGDi petrol, and 1.5-litre CRDi VGT diesel engines as the current model. Similarly, the 1.2-litre petrol engine will likely be paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, the 1.0-litre petrol engine with a standard 6-speed manual transmission or an optional 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and the 1.5-litre diesel engine with a 6-speed manual transmission.
