Scheduled to go on sale next year, the Renault and Nissan SUVs will further intensify the competition in the already crowded mid-size segment
The mid-size SUV segment has become the most competitive space in the Indian automotive market, accounting for around 13 models. Tata Motors recently launched the Sierra, while Maruti Suzuki introduced its second offering in the segment in the form of the Victoris. Now, Renault and Nissan are also targeting the mid-size SUV segment, with two brand-new products slated for launch in 2026.
Renault has already confirmed that the new-gen Duster will debut in the Indian market on January 26. While the details are scarce at the moment, the SUV will be quite similar to the international spec model in terms of design, however, there could be some country-specific changes.
The third-generation Duster will be based on the CMF-B platform, measuring around 4,360 mm long, with a wheelbase of 2,673 mm. While a big part of Duster’s popularity in India was because of its smooth and efficient diesel powertrain, the upcoming model will only rely on petrol engines.

The international spec model comes with a 1.2-litre mild-hybrid petrol motor, however, we will likely get the 1.3-litre HR13 turbo petrol unit, tuned to produce 154 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque. It will be mated to a 6-speed manual and a CVT automatic gearbox. Apart from this, a localised strong hybrid powertrain is also under consideration for India, which could be introduced at a later stage.
Nissan will also introduce a new mid-size SUV in the Indian market. Dubbed the Tekton, it will be based on the Renault Duster, using the familiar CMF-B platform. It will likely be launched around the same timeline, most probably in the first half of 2026. The Japanese carmaker gave a small glimpse of the Tekton’s exterior design, highlighting its inspiration from the flagship Patrol SUV.

The Renault Duster and Nissan Tekton will be quite familiar in terms of major mechanical parts, albeit with a different top hat. We expect both SUVs to carry a similar feature kit, but there could be some differentiation in the variant distribution. The Nissan SUV will share the powertrain with the Duster, i.e. the 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine, putting 154 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque.
Renault and Nissan are banking on the popularity of the mid-size SUVs in India, which is expected to grow in the coming years. The segment has around 13 models as of now, making it quite crowded, with the Creta leading the sales chart. It will be interesting to see how the launch of the Duster and Tekton will affect the overall market dynamics of the mid-size SUV segment.
