Maruti Suzuki has reached a major manufacturing milestone with the WagonR as cumulative production of the tall riding hatchback has crossed 35 lakh units in India. Achieved across three generations, it exemplifies the ever present popularity of the entry-level small car and its deep-rooted existence in Indian households since its debut more than two decades ago.
Introduced in December 1999, the Maruti Suzuki WagonR quickly carved out a niche for itself by focusing on space, practicality and ease of use. Over the years, it has evolved adapting to changing customer expectations. The WagonR now joins elite company within Maruti Suzuki’s portfolio – standing alongside models like the Alto and Swift that have also crossed landmark production figures.
Manufacturing of the WagonR currently takes place at Maruti Suzuki’s Gurgaon and Manesar plants in Haryana which together form the backbone of the company’s domestic production network. The model’s journey has seen several important milestones including the introduction of LPG and CNG options and the gradual addition of features such as automated manual transmission, improved safety equipment and higher trim levels.

Globally, the WagonR story began even earlier. Suzuki first introduced the WagonR in Japan in 1993 where it was developed as a compact and semi-bonnet mini wagon. Its success in Japan laid the foundation for international expansion including India, Europe and other markets. Today, the WagonR is sold in more than 75 countries and regions and in August 2025, the nameplate crossed the one crore cumulative sales mark worldwide.
In India, the latest-gen WagonR is built on Suzuki’s fifth-generation Heartect platform. Safety has taken a significant step forward as well with six airbags now offered as standard along with ABS with EBD and electronic stability control. Features such as a 7-inch SmartPlay Studio touchscreen with smartphone connectivity, Bluetooth and voice commands are also available.

Adding to its legacy, the WagonR has also been India’s highest-selling car for the past four financial years. Commenting on the new achievement, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said,
