The patent closely mirrors Hyundai’s Boulder concept with off-road intentions and a body-on-frame architecture
Hyundai has filed the design patent for the Boulder in India increasing the possibility of the brand’s first-ever dedicated off-road SUV for the domestic market. While there is no confirmation yet, the patent is significant because the design stays close to the Boulder concept unveiled earlier this year carrying over the upright proportions almost unchanged.
The patent shows flat bonnet, boxy body, upright windscreen, squared wheel arches, chunky body cladding and tall greenhouse. The front fascia also looks virtually identical to the concept as it retains the twin-section grille, distinctive Morse code-inspired H-shaped lighting signature, vertically stacked headlamp elements and pronounced skid plate. The muscular shoulder line and short overhangs have also been preserved.
Viewed from the side, the similarities become even more apparent. The patent drawing retains the prominent wheel arches, high ride height and upright roofline seen on the concept. The tailgate-mounted spare wheel, one of the Boulder’s signature design elements, has also been carried over. While concept-only elements such as the oversized off-road tyres, exposed roof rack and some utility accessories appear to be slightly toned down.
The Boulder has been conceived as Hyundai’s first dedicated body-on-frame off-roader. As opposed to the company’s monocoque SUVs, it rides on a fully boxed ladder-frame chassis developed for towing, hauling and serious off-road use. Hyundai has also confirmed that this new architecture will underpin its first midsize pickup truck before the end of the decade globally.
The concept rides on 18-inch wheels wrapped in massive 37×12.50 R18 LT mud-terrain tyres while the design allows for generous ground clearance, short overhangs and body proportions suited for improved approach, departure and break-over angles. You could also see heavy-duty tow hooks, a skid plate and a full-size spare wheel.
Inside the configurable cabin of the concept, Hyundai uses a utility-first layout with large physical buttons, rotary controls and substantial grab handles, fold-out tray tables, numerous storage compartments and software-based off-road guidance. Multiple practical touring equipment accompanied the concept as well and Hyundai said the drop-down rear glass can accommodate longer cargo while improving cabin ventilation during outdoor activities.
The production SUV is expected to feature a proper 4×4 system to match the capability suggested by its ladder-frame construction and adventure-specific design. If the Boulder reaches Indian roads as one of the seven new nameplates destined by 2030, it would give Hyundai an entirely new product category in addition to its existing SUV range. It could emerge as a direct rival to the Mahindra Thar Roxx and Force Gurkha 5-door.
