The upcoming BYD Atto 2 has been spotted testing on Indian roads and could become the brand’s most accessible electric SUV in the country
The BYD Atto 2 has been spotted testing on Indian roads, giving us the clearest indication yet that the Chinese carmaker is seriously considering bringing its smaller electric SUV to our market. It will sit below the Atto 3 and could take on the likes of the Hyundai Creta Electric, Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara and Mahindra BE 6.
The test mule appears to be close to the international-spec model, although the car spotted in India was heavily camouflaged. The Atto 2 has a fairly upright SUV stance with chunky black cladding around the wheel arches and lower body. It measures 4,310 mm long, 1,830 mm wide and 1,675 mm tall, with a 2,620mm wheelbase. This makes it a fairly compact SUV, although it is still longer than the four-metre-plus compact SUVs that dominate the segment.
The cabin is expected to be one of the Atto 2’s strong points. The international model gets a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, ambient lighting and a panoramic glass roof. The infotainment system supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while a 15 W wireless charging pad and multiple USB Type-C ports are also available. The SUV also has a 400-litre boot, which should make it reasonably practical for everyday family use.

The powertrain is where things get particularly interesting. In its international form, the Atto 2 uses a front-mounted electric motor. The European-spec version is available with outputs of up to 176 hp, while the battery pack is a 45.1 kWh Blade Battery. BYD claims a range of around 312km on the WLTP cycle. A longer-range version with a claimed range of approximately 402 km has also been discussed, although it remains to be seen which battery and motor combination will make it to India.
BYD could also make some changes to the India-spec car. The company has already been expanding its local operations and recently introduced more products across different segments, so the Atto 2 could be positioned as a more accessible entry point into the brand’s electric SUV range. The expected price is currently in the Rs 18 lakh to Rs 25 lakh region, although this is not official and will depend heavily on localisation and the final specification.

The competition will be rather interesting. The Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara and Hyundai Creta Electric are already established names in this space, while Mahindra’s BE 6 brings considerably more performance to the table. BYD’s advantage could be its battery technology and feature-rich cabin, but pricing will be crucial. The Atto 2 cannot afford to be priced too close to the larger Atto 3 either.
