10 Upcoming Compact SUVs Worth Waiting For In India

Mahindra Vision S, Hyundai’s compact EV, next-gen Nexon and Sonet, Volkswagen Tera and several other SUVs are lined up over the next two years

Mahindra will add a new nameplate to the compact SUV field as the production version of the Vision S concept is currently under development. The SUV is expected to sit between the XUV 3XO and Scorpio N and will ride on the modular NU_IQ monocoque architecture. Its upright proportions should separate it visually from the XUV 3XO and reports point to 1.2-litre turbo petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines.

Volkswagen could also enter this space sometime next year with the Tera. The compact SUV is expected to share the MQB A0 IN architecture seen on locally manufactured Volkswagen Group models and could retain the familiar 1.0-litre TSI turbo petrol engine. Equipment list could be shared with the Skoda Kylaq and styling may carry cues associated with the Taigun.

Hyundai has two additions lined up across closely related size classes. An India-specific electric compact SUV will arrive before the end of this calendar year and is expected to target a real-world range of around 500 km. It will compete with the Tata Punch EV and Mahindra XUV 3XO EV. The slightly larger Bayon is also due shortly and will give Hyundai another SUV between its current compact and midsize offerings.

Honda and Renault will enter later in the product cycle. Honda’s compact SUV is expected in early 2028 and could share its architecture with the latest Amaze. A 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine is possible initially with hybrid technology also under consideration. Renault’s Bridger is scheduled around the end of 2027 and could feature a 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrain.

Tata Motors will renew one of its biggest compact SUV nameplates as the Nexon is in for a brand new generation. Reports point to a longer wheelbase and substantially different exterior styling compared with the current model. Turbo petrol, CNG and electric derivatives are expected to feature in the powertrain lineup enabling Tata several propulsion choices under the same moniker.

Kia has already expanded its compact SUV portfolio with the Syros EV this year and the next-generation Sonet will showcase the next major change. Test prototypes have already been spotted with reports pointing to a new architecture, increased dimensions, a thoroughly redesigned cabin and extra safety equipment. VinFast will target the lower end of the electric SUV category with the VF 3. It offers an 18.6 kWh battery in its international specification.

Maruti Suzuki has already introduced the updated Brezza leaving the Fronx as its next apparent compact SUV revision. A mid-cycle update is expected in the near future as competition intensifies across the category. With new nameplates from Mahindra, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Honda and Renault joining redesigned versions of the Nexon and Sonet, the compact SUV category is set for a substantial reshuffle over the next two years.
