Five new compact electric cars, all likely to be SUV models, are expected to arrive in Indian showrooms by 2028
The choice of electric cars in India has grown considerably over the last two years, but mostly in premium segments. However, five new compact EVs are expected to be launched in the next two years, which would significantly expand the options for customers with smaller budgets.
Sometime in November or December this year, Hyundai will launch its long-rumoured entry-level electric SUV codenamed ‘HE1i’. The company is developing this model primarily for India and has designed it according to the needs and preferences of local consumers.
Spy shots have revealed that this model will have a squarish exterior aimed at delivering maximum space in a compact footprint. Along with the traditional shape, a high ground clearance, large windows, and raised roof rails will give the HE1i an authentic SUV look.

The interior would be unlike any other Hyundai on sale today, featuring a minimalist dashboard with a pair of sleek displays: a 9.9-inch panel for the instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch touch-operated unit for the infotainment system. Hyundai will likely give a choice of two LFP battery pack options, the larger of which should deliver a range of around 500 kilometres. The company has confirmed it will offer Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems in this model.
In mid-2027, Tata Motors is expected to launch the next-gen Nexon. In line with the company’s recent product strategy, the next-gen Nexon.ev should follow soon. The all-new Nexon.ev should have a completely new design, better build quality, and a myriad of new features, including several improved and additional advanced driver assistance systems.

There’s no word on the technical specifications, but it’s safe to assume that the battery packs offered will again consist of LFP cells, but this time the maximum range could be over 525 kilometres. Renault has confirmed plans to offer the Bridger, which it plans to launch in the second half of 2027, in an electric variant.
The company could introduce the electric variant sometime in the first half of 2028. VinFast is also expected to launch an electric compact SUV in 2028, codenamed ‘VF X’. VinFast has started the development of this model and is targeting a base price of around Rs. 11.5 lakh (ex-showroom).
Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest carmaker by volume, is developing a new electric car priced below Rs. 10 lakh (ex-showroom) in the base trim, according to a recent report from Fortune India. This EV is likely to be much smaller than the other EVs stated in the story, though, possibly an A-segment model, as people aware of the development have indicated that the range could be similar to the Tata Tiago.ev, which can travel 285 kilometres on a single charge. Maruti Suzuki could launch this model sometime in 2028.
