Codenamed YMC, Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming three-row EV will share its electric architecture with the e Vitara
Maruti Suzuki is working on a new three-row electric vehicle, internally known as the YMC, which is expected to make its way to India in 2027. While it has often been referred to as a 7-seater electric SUV, the upcoming model is actually expected to have a more MPV-like focus, with a spacious cabin and three rows of seating. Test mules have already been spotted on Indian roads, suggesting that development is well underway.
The YMC will share its basic electric architecture with the Maruti e Vitara, including the HEARTECT-e platform. This makes sense from a cost and localisation perspective, particularly since Maruti has already invested heavily in developing its EV ecosystem. The company currently offers the e Vitara with 49 kWh and 61 kWh battery packs, with the larger battery claiming up to 543 km of range.
However, don’t expect the YMC to deliver the same range figures. It will be considerably larger and will have a third row, which means additional weight and a less aerodynamic shape. Reports suggest that the YMC could use the same battery options, but the final certified range is likely to be lower than the e Vitara’s 543 km maximum. The electric motor and other key powertrain components could also be shared.

Design-wise, the test vehicle gives us a few clues. The YMC appears to have a boxier and more upright silhouette than the e Vitara, which is exactly what you would expect from a vehicle designed around three rows. It gets a large rear quarter section, upright front and rear ends, and conventional pull-type door handles. The vertical tail-lamps also appear to wrap around the rear windscreen, giving it a slightly MPV-ish character.
The biggest selling point, however, is likely to be the cabin space. Maruti already has a strong reputation for practical family cars through models such as the Ertiga and XL6. The YMC could bring that same philosophy to an electric vehicle, with three rows of seating, flexible interior space and the sort of everyday usability that Indian family buyers look for. It is also expected to borrow some technology and equipment from the e Vitara.

The YMC is expected to be positioned as a relatively accessible three-row EV. Current estimates suggest a price somewhere around Rs 14 lakh to Rs 18 lakh, although this is still speculation and the final positioning could be different. It could compete with upcoming electric MPVs and SUVs, including the Kia Carens Clavis EV, while also attracting buyers considering larger five-seat electric SUVs.
For Maruti, the YMC could be an important second step into electric mobility. The e Vitara has established the company’s EV platform and ecosystem; the YMC could take that technology into a segment where space and practicality matter just as much as range. If Maruti can get the pricing right, this could be one of the more interesting family EVs to watch in 2027.
