Mahindra’s new SUV onslaught to double its EV line-up, covering various new segments and aiming both value-focused and enthusiast customers

Mahindra’s EV line-up might be limited right now, but it will see significant expansion in the next three years. The company is likely to launch as many as four new EVs by 2028, aimed at customers who prioritise efficiency and affordability as well as performance and capability.

We’ve known for a while now that the next two EV launches from Mahindra will be the XUV 3XO EV and the XEV 7e. While the company has not disclosed the launch cadence, it has confirmed that it will bring one new EV to the domestic market in November, which we are confident will be either the XUV 3XO or the XEV 7e. The second model should follow later this fiscal.

The Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, true to its name, will be the pure electric variant of the Mahindra XUV 3XO. Positioned below the Mahindra XUV400, it will be a direct Tata Nexon.ev rival. A blanked-off upper grille area, a new lower air intake, and a revised front bumper should distinguish it from the ICE model. Mahindra is expected to equip this model with a 35 kWh battery pack, which we expect to deliver a range of well over 400 km.

Mahindra XEV 7E EV

The Mahindra XEV 7e will be the first locally manufactured seven-seat electric SUV, aimed mainly at big families. It will be closely related to the Mahindra XEV 9e mechanically, but its silhouette will mimic the conventionally shaped Mahindra XUV700. Its top configuration should deliver a range of approximately 600 km and pack premium features like semi-active dampers, a gesture-controlled tailgate, an augmented reality head-up display, a 12.3-inch front passenger touchscreen, seven airbags, and Level 2+ advanced driver assistance systems.

Sometime in 2027, Mahindra could launch a Rally-inspired version of the BE 6e, featuring a special raised suspension, exclusive all-terrain tyres, additional off-road gear, and various other modifications that cater to customers with a knack for adventures beyond the city limits. The company previewed this potential derivative with the BE-Rall-E concept in early 2023 and has been testing its production version on public roads since late last year.

Mahindra BE6 Rall-E

A Mahindra Thar EV could break cover in the second half of 2028, catering to serious off-roaders. Based on the new NU_IQ modular platform, which can spawn ICE vehicles as well as hybrids and BEVs, it may come only in a practical five-door version. Previewed by the Vision.T concept, which is an evolution of the Vision Thar.e, this electric SUV could be the first Thar featuring a ground-up in-house design, departing completely from the Willys Jeep lineage.

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ Revealed, It’s A Baby LC

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ 9

Toyota has once again tapped into its legendary off-road heritage with the global unveiling of the all-new Land Cruiser FJ, a rugged, compact SUV that blends nostalgia with modern capability. Revealed in Japan ahead of its official debut at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, the FJ is slated for launch in its home market around mid-2026, before likely making its way to global markets.

The Land Cruiser story began in 1951 with the Toyota BJ — the first vehicle to climb to the sixth station of Mount Fuji. Over seven decades later, the Land Cruiser nameplate has become synonymous with reliability, endurance, and go-anywhere confidence, selling over 12 million units across 190 countries. With the new FJ, Toyota aims to rekindle that same spirit of “Freedom & Joy” for a new generation of explorers.

The design of the Land Cruiser FJ pays homage to the past while looking ahead. It sports a boxy silhouette with chamfered edges, flared fenders, and removable bumpers — all functional touches that nod to its utilitarian roots. The square cabin emphasizes practicality and space, while allowing easy customization, ensuring each FJ can reflect its owner’s personality.

Inside, the cabin combines ruggedness with thoughtful ergonomics. A horizontal dashboard layout improves visibility, especially on tricky terrain, while intuitive controls and a well-positioned shift lever enhance the driving experience. Toyota has equipped the FJ with Safety Sense, the brand’s latest suite of active safety technologies, ensuring confidence both on and off the road.

Under the hood lies a familiar workhorse — a 2.7-litre petrol engine (163 PS, 246 Nm) paired with a 6-speed automatic gearbox and part-time four-wheel-drive system. Built on a platform refined from Toyota’s IMV series, the FJ offers a shorter wheelbase than the Land Cruiser 250, improving agility and off-road manoeuvrability. A minimum turning radius of 5.5 metres and reinforced body rigidity further enhance its control and stability.

Toyota also showcased a range of customisation options, including round retro headlights, MOLLE panels for outdoor gear, and accessories that amplify the SUV’s adventurous character. Alongside the FJ, Toyota unveiled the Land Hopper, an electric personal mobility concept that fits into the FJ’s boot — designed to take exploration even further.

On a personal note, I really hope Toyota launches the Land Cruiser FJ in India as well. Seeing the success of the Fortuner and LC300, I am 100% confident that this SUV will also do really well and if paired with a diesel engine here, it should give some sleepless nights to other SUVs.

Maruti-Suzuki-Fronx.jpg

In the opening half of FY 2025–26, India’s passenger vehicle shipments have grown by nearly 20 per cent, reaching close to 4.5 lakh units

In the first half of FY 2025–26, passenger vehicle shipments from India have grown by nearly 20 per cent – reaching close to 4.5 lakh units between April and September. It acts as a testament to India’s expanding role as a major export hub for compact and midsize vehicles across international markets.

At the forefront of this surge is Maruti Suzuki which has already dispatched over 2 lakh units in the first six months of this fiscal – putting it firmly on track to cross 4 lakh units by the closure of the fiscal. Popular models in terms of exports are the Fronx, Swift, Baleno, Dzire and the much-celebrated Jimny 5-door – the latter now reaching customers even in Japan.

The company has also begun overseas shipments of electric vehicles with over 6,000 units exported in August and September alone as the initial reception for the e Vitara has been tremendous. Hyundai Motor India, the country’s second largest exporter, has also registered solid gains in the first half of this financial year.

Exports from the Korean manufacturer rose around 17 per cent year-on-year in H1 FY26 with nearly one lakh units shipped compared to 84,900 units in the same period last year. Hyundai has already outlined plans to make India a global export hub for both EVs and ICE models. Nissan too continues to leverage its Chennai facility as a key global export base.

The Japanese brand ships the Magnite compact SUV to more than 65 countries and the Sunny sedan to several Middle Eastern markets. India now stands as Nissan’s second largest exporter within its AMIEO (Africa, Middle East, India, Europe & Oceania) business region. Volkswagen and other established OEMs have also contributed to the export surge as low input sourcing costs and labour as well as strong manufacturing quality come handy.

What has been a significant driver this fiscal is the diversity of vehicles being shipped abroad as affordable hatchbacks, compact sedans, premium and off-road SUVs as well as electrified models have been shipped. With export growth outpacing initial forecasts, India’s auto industry seems on track to strengthen its global footprint.
