Maruti Ignis Discontinued in India, New Micro SUV Incoming

Maruti Ignis 1

Maruti Suzuki has discontinued the Ignis hatchback in India, marking the end of its nearly eight-year run in the market. The decision comes amid declining demand for the model, which was positioned as a quirky, urban-focused hatchback sold through the brand’s NEXA retail network.

According to dealer sources, production of the Ignis ceased over a month ago, and bookings for the model have now been halted. While the carmaker has not issued an official statement yet, the development signals a strategic shift in Maruti Suzuki’s entry-level premium segment approach.

Launched in 2017 and updated with a facelift in 2020, the Ignis stood out for its unconventional design and compact proportions. It was offered in multiple trims over time, with features such as a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, automatic climate control and push-button start available in higher variants.

Built on the lightweight Heartect platform, the Ignis was powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine paired with manual and AMT gearbox options. While it earned praise for its ease of driving and efficiency, its polarising design and limited positioning in a shifting market likely contributed to its gradual decline in popularity.

The discontinuation aligns with broader market trends in India, where demand has increasingly shifted towards SUVs and crossover-style vehicles. Maruti Suzuki is now reportedly preparing a new small SUV, internally codenamed Y43, which is expected to take the place of the Ignis in the lineup.

This upcoming model is likely to compete directly with rivals such as the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter, both of which have seen strong traction in the segment. The new SUV is expected to slot below the Maruti Suzuki Brezza and could be retailed via NEXA dealerships.

While official details remain limited, the upcoming SUV is expected to feature a 1.2-litre petrol engine, potentially with Dualjet technology. Given the competitive landscape, Maruti Suzuki may also consider multiple powertrain options, although this has not been confirmed.

The segment has evolved significantly in recent years, with models like the Tata Punch offering a mix of petrol, CNG and even electric variants, alongside feature upgrades introduced in recent updates. This raises the bar for new entrants aiming to establish a foothold.

With the Ignis now discontinued, Maruti Suzuki appears to be aligning its portfolio more closely with prevailing consumer preferences, focusing on SUVs to strengthen its position in the entry-level and compact segments.

7-Seater Kia Sorento Hybrid Caught Testing In India, Launch Soon?

GaadiWaadi -

Kia Sorento (4)

Kia Sorento Hybrid will more likely introduce a 1.6-litre turbocharged hybrid petrol powertrain enabling around 238 hp in standard form

Kia appears to be advancing its plans for a new premium SUV for India as the Sorento Hybrid has now been sighted undergoing road tests near Delhi. The heavily camouflaged prototype shows that development is underway for local conditions but it is yet unknown whether the global Sorento is heading to India or a brand new three-row SUV is specifically developed for our demanding marketplace.

Nevertheless, the prototype points towards a possible launch in the coming years. The timing of this sighting sticks with Kia’s long term plans revealed at its 2026 CEO Investor Day where the brand confirmed an expansion to ten models in India by the end of the decade. Notably, eight of these will feature electrified powertrains – hybrids and EVs.

Among the key highlights are the Sorento Hybrid, a hybrid version of the Carnival and an all-electric Syros. Positioned in the full-size SUV category, the Sorento Hybrid is expected to go up against established rivals such as the Toyota Fortuner, Skoda Kodiaq, MG Gloster and Jeep Meridian. Based on its international dimensions, the SUV could measure close to 4.8 metres in length and offer a wheelbase of around 2.8 metres.

Under the bonnet, Kia will more likely introduce a 1.6-litre turbocharged hybrid powertrain which would make the Sorento the brand’s first hybrid SUV in India. In global markets, the setup delivers around 238 hp in standard hybrid form while a plug-in hybrid variant pushes output to around 288 hp. Transmission choices are expected to include a six-speed automatic and an eight-speed dual-clutch unit with all-wheel-drive configurations also likely to be offered.

As for the design, despite the camouflage, the test mule reveals a familiar silhouette with an upright stance. The squared-off proportions and vertically oriented headlamp elements suggest that it closely follows the latest Opposites United design language. Kia is reportedly targeting an annual production volume of around 50,000 units targetting both domestic sales and export markets.

Hyundai is also said to be working on a similarly positioned three-row SUV using shared underpinnings and it could use a localised 1.5-litre NA petrol/hybrid engine . With an expected price tag in the vicinity of Rs 35 lakh (ex-showroom), the Sorento Hybrid could become an alternative for those looking beyond traditional diesel SUVs.

Renault Triber To Finally Get A Turbo Petrol Engine Later This Year

GaadiWaadi -

2025-Renault-Triber-Facelift-4.jpg

Launched in 2019, the Renault Triber got a facelift in 2025 but is still only available with 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine

As a sub-4 metre MPV designed to accommodate seven people, the Renault Triber is a brilliant product, but it has long been criticised for being underpowered. Seven years into its lifecycle, a fix is finally coming in the form of a turbocharged petrol engine.

At an India-specific strategy event held on 16 April, Renault announced plans to make the Triber more appealing with two new variants. The first variant will feature a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine, targeted at customers who are willing to pay a premium for the much-needed bump in power and torque.

Renault will use the same HR10 engine it offers in the Kiger in the turbo petrol variant of the Triber. Similarly, it will pair this engine with a 5-speed manual transmission as standard and offer a CVT as an option. In the Kiger, the HR10 engine has been tuned to deliver 100 PS (99 hp) and 160 Nm of torque with the manual transmission and 100 PS (99 hp) and 152 Nm of torque with the CVT.

2025 Renault Triber Facelift 3

The Renault Triber turbo petrol is said to be launched in the September-October period, just in time for the festive season. It may only be offered in the higher-end techno and emotion trims, at a premium of about Rs. 90,000 with the manual transmission and about Rs. 1.9 lakh with the CVT.

The second new variant will feature a bi-fuel petrol-CNG engine. Renault has been offering a retrofitment kit that can be used to make this conversion at its dealerships, but the upcoming variant will feature a factory-fitted CNG kit. Moreover, it will have a new layout in which there are two compact cylinders instead of a big one, both placed under the boot area. The dual-cylinder setup would ensure that the boot space isn’t compromised. For reference, the Triber offers 84 litres of boot space, which can be expanded to 625 litres by folding the third row seats.

2025 Renault Triber Facelift 2

While the current Triber CNG with the dealer-installed kit relies on a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated three-cylinder petrol engine, the new Triber CNG with the factory-fitted kit will feature the new 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine. A CVT option is unlikely to be offered with the bi-fuel version, meaning a 5-speed manual transmission would be standard.

Nissan’s Next Big Launch In India To Be Tekton Midsize SUV

GaadiWaadi -

Nissan Tekton (2)

Nissan Tekton expected to be launched at around Rs. 10.50 lakh (ex-showroom) in May, followed by a three-row SUV around the end of the year

Nissan’s resurgence plan in India is set to begin soon with a re-entry into the country’s hot mid-size SUV segment. The company will launch a new model called the Tekton as the successor to the Terrano, which it discontinued in mid-2020.

The Nissan Tekton will be inspired by the Japanese automaker’s legendary Nissan Patrol, now in its seventh generation and under consideration for launch in India. Nissan has almost entirely revealed the exterior through teasers. High ground clearance, muscular bodywork, and contemporary design elements will give the Tekton a good balance of old-school and modern SUV attributes.

At the front, there will be rectangular, sleek headlamps with angular DRLs connected via a light band. Two horizontal slats over the radiator grille will stretch across the width, tipping the headlamps. The bonnet will feature power domes, and the bumper will have a sharp look.

Upcoming Nissan Tekton

On the sides, the Tekton will have pronounced wheel arches, a strong shoulder section, and 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels. A ‘Double-C’ shaped accent featuring a Himalayan-inspired mountain motif will be another interesting design element here, located on the front doors. At the rear, there will be C-shaped tail lamps connected via a lightbar.

The interior should have a modern-tough theme, combining a modern layout and design with rugged touches in key areas such as the dashboard, door panels, and centre console. The cabin will likely be loaded to the brim with premium equipment, including a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Google built-in, a dual-zone automatic climate control system, 6-way power-adjustable front seats with manual lumbar support and ventilation, and a panoramic sunroof.

Nissan Tekton

Nissan will likely bundle more than 15 advanced driver assistance systems as well, including lane keep assist, blind spot warning, traffic sign recognition, active emergency braking system, adaptive cruise control with stop & go, and a 360º camera system. Six airbags should be standard.

At launch, the Tekton will likely be available with a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission and a 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine linked to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission featuring a wet clutch. The former should produce 100 PS (99 hp) and 166 Nm of torque, and the latter will likely develop 163 PS (161 hp) and 280 Nm of torque. A hybrid system based on a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine may follow early next year.
