Toyota line-up in India to gain two new types of electrified vehicles this year, with the first of the duo just weeks away from launch

After offering full-hybrid models for over fifteen years, including fully imported and locally assembled/manufactured ones, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) is set to introduce two new electrification technologies. The company plans to launch an all-electric Urban Cruiser and a mild-hybrid Fortuner this year. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming electrified Toyota models so far:

1. Toyota Urban Cruiser

The Toyota Urban Cruiser, not to be confused with the rebadged version of the first-generation Maruti Vitara Brezza, is a corporate cousin of the Maruti e Vitara. It has a distinctive front-end inspired by a hammerhead shark, which gives it a less aggressive and more polished look.

Sleek headlamps and faux upper grille, a simpler bumper featuring vertical side air inlets, and a smaller air intake lend the Toyota Urban Cruiser a more sophisticated styling at the front. Elsewhere, it looks no different from the Maruti e Vitara, and even its interior is completely the same. TKM should offer the all-new Urban Cruiser in standard-range FWD and a long-range FWD variants.

The standard-range FWD variant will likely have a 105.8 kW (142 hp)/192.5 Nm motor and a 47.8 kWh (net) LFP battery pack. It should accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.6 seconds, achieve a top speed of 150 km/h, and deliver a range of more than 400 km. The long-range FWD variant will likely use a 128 kW (172 hp)/192.5 Nm motor and a 59.8 kWh (net) LFP battery pack.

It will likely hit 0 to 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds, max out at the same, 150 km/h, and travel up to over 500 km on a full charge. The Toyota Urban Cruiser will be launched in India likely in the fourth quarter of the year.

2. Toyota Fortuner Mild-Hybrid

The Toyota Fortuner Mild-Hybrid is likely to offer minor fuel efficiency improvement over the regular model. It uses a 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel engine, a 6-speed automatic transmission, and an optional part-time 4WD system just like the non-electrified model. However, it has a belt-integrated starter generator (BSG) instead of an alternator, along with a 48-volt lithium-ion battery and a DC-DC converter for electric assistance.

The Fortuner Mild-Hybrid’s BSG is a permanent magnet synchronous motor that charges the 48-volt lithium-ion battery during deceleration. This battery, which consists of 13 cells and has a 4.3 Ah capacity, weighs 7.6 kg and is housed beneath the rear seats. It can supply the recuperated energy to the vehicle’s 12-volt battery through a DC/DC converter, indirectly powering ancillary components like lights and in-cabin electronics, among others.

More importantly, the BSG can assist the engine with up to 12 kW (16 hp) of power and 65 Nm of torque to improve acceleration and reduce fuel consumption. The engine alone develops 150 kW (201 hp) and 500 Nm of torque. TKM plans to launch the Fortuner Mild-Hybrid in June.
