Tata Motors didn’t have the best of times during May 2025 as most of its models, barring the Nexon and Tiago, struggled to perform in the domestic market
Tata Motors lost the third position in May 2025 domestic sales in the passenger vehicle segment in the Indian market. It slipped to the fourth spot as Hyundai bounced back to capture the third slot. Tata sold a total of 41,557 units last month as compared to 46,700 units retailed during May 2024, and hence witnessing a sharp YoY decline of 11 percent. Its market share also fell down by 1.5 percent from 13.4 percent in May’24 to 11.9 percent to May’25. The Nexon and Punch SUVs had decent sales numbers last month as the company sold more than 13k units of the duo domestically.
First things first, Tata Punch, despite selling 13,133 units in May 2025, recorded a massive YoY de-growth of 31 percent. For reference, the brand had retailed 18,949 units of the Punch in May 2024. The Nexon, on the other hand, witnessed a slight YoY growth of 14 percent in May 2025 with numbers of 13,096 units as compared to 11,457 units sold during the same month last year.
Tata Tiago was the third highest-selling model in the company’s portfolio in May 2025 with volumes of 6407 units against 5,927 units retailed during the same month last year. It is the only Tata model after the Nexon to register a YoY growth in May 2025 sales. Tata Curvv sales numbers came down to 3,063 units last month, which is a signal that it has already started to lose its charm among the buyers.

Recently, the 2025 Tata Altroz facelift was launched in the Indian market. However, it had little to zero impact on the dwindling sales numbers of the hatchback as merely 2,779 units were sold last month against 4,983 units in May 2024. The Tigor too continued its dismal performance with volumes coming down to 1076 units from 2098 units in May 2024.
The SUV duo of Harrier and Safari also had a tough time last month as both suffered heavy losses amidst the rising competition. While the Harrier numbers came down to triple digits (894 units) for the first time with YoY negative growth of 45 percent, the Safari too faced a setback with numbers coming down to 1109 units. Just so you know, Tata Motors had retailed 1,625 and 1,661 units of the Harrier and Safari, respectively, in May 2024.

Tata Harrier EV was recently introduced in the Indian market at a starting price of Rs 21.49 lakh (ex-showroom). However, the company refrained from announcing the complete variant-wise pricing. Even the delivery timeline of the all-electric SUV was kept under the wraps. The bookings for the Harrier e-SUV will begin from July 2, 2025 across the country. It is the sixth all-electric model in Tata’s portfolio after the Tiago, Tigor, Nexon, Punch and Curvv.
