Hyundai is preparing to expand its SUV portfolio with a new crossover that will be positioned above the Venue and below the Creta
Hyundai already has one of the most extensive SUV line-ups in India. However, there is still a gap between the sub-4 meter and the compact SUV segment. The upcoming Bayon-based SUV is expected to sit between the Venue and Creta, giving Hyundai a product for buyers who want something larger and more premium than the Venue without stepping up to the Creta.
The new SUV is expected to measure around 4.18 metres in length, putting it in an interesting space in the Indian market. It will be larger than the Venue but slightly smaller than the Creta. Hyundai appears to be targeting the growing mid-size SUV space with this model, rather than simply positioning it as a larger compact crossover.
The upcoming SUV has already been spotted testing in India. The test mule appears to have a relatively upright and boxy silhouette, while some design elements seem to be inspired by Hyundai’s latest models. The production version is expected to borrow its basic design philosophy from the global Bayon.

Like all of its offerings, Hyundai is also expected to offer a fairly comprehensive feature list. The global Bayon gets features such as a digital instrument cluster, a large touchscreen infotainment system, wireless smartphone connectivity and wireless charging. Ventilated front seats and connected car technology could also be offered on higher variants of the India-spec SUV.
The powertrain options are yet to be officially confirmed. However, the upcoming SUV could get a naturally aspirated petrol engine as well as a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit. The latter could be paired with a manual and automatic transmission, giving Hyundai the flexibility to cater to both buyers who enjoy driving and those who simply want a convenient daily driver. Since this is an SUV, the 1.5-litre diesel is also on the cards.

The new SUV will be an interesting addition to Hyundai’s portfolio because it will not directly replace the Venue or the Creta. Instead, it will fill the gap between the two. Buyers who find the Venue a little too small but do not want to spend Creta money could find the Bayon-based SUV to be just what they were looking for. Think of it as a competitor to the Tata Curvv and the Citroen Basalt.
