BMW’s new X1 LWB SUV adds 108 mm to the wheelbase, 109 mm of rear knee room and a 156 bhp turbocharged petrol engine
BMW India will launch the X1 Long Wheelbase in India on August 21 as it will add a stretched version of its entry-level SUV to the local portfolio. The India-spec model will be sold in a single sDrive 18i M Sport variant as it will bring in a larger cabin and a petrol powertrain to a model range that currently relies on the standard wheelbase version in its diesel form.
The X1 LWB measures 4,616 mm in length, 1,845 mm in width and 1,641 mm in height. Its 2,802 mm wheelbase is 108 mm longer than the standard X1 sold here while overall length has grown by 116 mm. BMW has also added 15 mm to the rear seat cushion and 109 mm of knee room as it has created a considerably roomier second row.
Power comes from a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing a maximum power output of 156 bhp and 230 Nm of peak torque. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox sends power to the front wheels only. Torque output is unchanged from the earlier petrol X1 while peak power rises by a total of 22 bhp.

The stretched body also creates a luggage compartment of 540 litres while the fuel tank holds 54 litres. The SUV rides on 18-inch alloy wheels and gets a design derived from BMW’s latest styling language. Its front end features a large kidney grille, adaptive LED headlamps and LED daytime running lamps as most of the eye-grabbing elements are reminiscent of the regular model.
The exterior specification also covers satin-aluminium roof rails, flush-style door handles, a panoramic glass roof, shark-fin antenna, rear spoiler, sculpted bumpers and LED tail lamps. On the inside, BMW has carried over the dashboard layout but the extra wheelbase is directed primarily towards rear seat space. Powered front seats, driver memory, electrically adjustable ORVMs, dual-zone climate control, rear AC vents and a powered tailgate are available.

A 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, BMW Digital Key, Park Assist Plus, Reverse Assistant, integrated navigation, voice assistant, connected services, over-the-air software updates, USB Type-C ports and multiple drive modes are also present. Safety equipment is set to cover eight airbags, ABS, EBD, Dynamic Stability Control, traction control, tyre-pressure monitoring, an electronic parking brake, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, and ISOFIX mounts.
The inclusion of ADAS functions is another highlight. The BMW X1 LWB will sit against the Mercedes-Benz GLA, Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40.
