Three variants, more powerful engines and major chassis changes are key part of the new three-door Mahindra Thar OG range

Mahindra introduced the Thar OG yesterday in India with introductory prices starting at Rs. 10.32 lakh (ex-showroom). The new three-door model replaces the previous Thar and introduces the AXT, LXT and ZXT variant lineup. Deliveries will begin on October 11, 2026, and the introductory prices apply to vehicles delivered until November 30. The range comprises 1.5-litre and 2.2-litre diesels along with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations.

The petrol range begins only from the LXT – priced at Rs. 14.77 lakh in rear-wheel-drive automatic specification. Four-wheel drive costs Rs. 15.60 lakh with the manual gearbox and Rs. 17.23 lakh with the automatic. ZXT petrol prices stretch from Rs. 16.09 lakh for the RWD automatic to Rs. 17.75 lakh for the 4WD automatic. The diesel range has a much lower entry point because the 1.5-litre D117 engine is offered from AXT at Rs. 10.32 lakh.

The 2.2-litre mHawk diesel starts at Rs. 16.43 lakh in LXT 4WD manual specification and the 4WD automatic costs Rs. 18.00 lakh. ZXT takes those figures to Rs. 17.49 lakh and Rs. 18.99 lakh respectively. Mahindra also offers the 2.2-litre diesel with rear-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox at Rs. 16.49 lakh in LXT and Rs. 17.49 lakh in ZXT. The 1.5-litre diesel is restricted to rear-wheel drive and a manual transmission.

Mahindra has increased output from the larger petrol and diesel engines. The 2.0-litre G20 TGDi mStallion now develops around 160 hp (10 hp more) and 330 Nm and the 2.2-litre D22 mHawk now produces around 150 hp and 330 Nm. The 1.5-litre D117 CRDe diesel retains its 117 hp and 300 Nm figures. Four-wheel-drive versions also gain an Electronic Locking Differential and dedicated Mud, Sand and Snow terrain modes while selected rear-wheel-drive versions receive Terrain Assist.

The Thar OG also gets substantial changes beneath the familiar three-door body. Mahindra’s new M_Glyde 4G platform features increased stiffness and the rear suspension switches to a Pentalink arrangement with a Watts Link. The FDD (Frequency Dependent Damping) is offered on the ZXT and electric power steering replaces the earlier hydraulic setup. Mahindra has also added extra NVH insulation as well.

Design changes include an updated grille section, round LED headlamps with C-shaped DRLs, redesigned bumpers, OG badging and 19-inch alloy wheels on the ZXT. LED fog lamps gain a cornering function and Mahindra has introduced Artemis Silver and Jeans Blue alongside six existing colours. The cabin receives Truffle Brown leatherette upholstery on the ZXT, along with a 10.25-inch HD touchscreen, wireless charging, rear-view camera and front parking sensors.

Safety equipment also increases notably at the top of the range. ZXT gets six airbags including four HPTS airbags for head, pelvis, thorax and shoulder protection, along with disc brakes at all four wheels, ESP 9.3 and tyre-pressure monitoring. AXT starts with dual airbags, ESP and front disc/rear drum brakes while LXT adds extra off-road hardware and equipment.
