Mahindra moves ahead of Tata to second position while Maruti Suzuki holds 40.4 per cent market share in September 2026 in India

The top 15 car brands sold 4,20,359 units in September 2026 as their sales were up 31.8 per cent from 3,18,907 units sold during the same period last year. The combined volume also increased 2.6 per cent from 4,09,528 units in August. Maruti Suzuki stayed well ahead of every other manufacturer and Mahindra moved into second place ahead of Tata going by Vahan registrations.

Maruti Suzuki sold a domestic total of 1,69,826 units during the month – up 30.1 per cent from 1,30,533 units a year earlier. The company held a 40.4 per cent market share and recorded virtually no change from August when sales stood at 1,69,756 units. The difference between the two months was just 70 units. The second position went to Mahindra after sales rose 35.5 per cent on a YoY basis to 57,817 units.

The company also recorded a 7.8 per cent increase from August and secured a 13.8 per cent market share. Tata registered a tally of 56,156 units – up 28.1 per cent YoY – but sales dropped 3.3 per cent from 58,045 units in August. The gap between Mahindra and Tata stood at only 1,661 units as the plot thickens ahead of the festive season.

Hyundai garnered a total of 50,201 units in September as its volumes increased 31.5 per cent YoY and 4.4 per cent MoM as it posted its highest cumulative monthly tally. The company held an 11.9 per cent market share and finished 5,955 units behind Tata. Toyota recorded 28,212 units – up 21.4 per cent YoY – and Kia posted 26,668 units after a 45.9 per cent increase from September 2025.

The total volume of Kia also rose 9.7 per cent from August. The seventh position went to Skoda and Volkswagen with 8,468 units as it saw a YoY increase of 13.8 per cent. MG sold 6,475 units and Honda recorded 5,283 units with the latter up 42.5 per cent from a year earlier. Renault posted 3,411 units – up 33.1 per cent – and Nissan reached 2,967 units against 1,379 units in September 2025.

VinFast recorded 2,964 units against just six units in September 2025 which resulted in a massive YoY increase. The company also grew 32.4 per cent from August. BYD sold 836 units – up 47.4 per cent MoM and Citroen recorded 803 units. Jeep completed the top 15 with 272 units as its sales figures witnessed a jump of 39.5 per cent from August.

The top six brands contributed 3,88,880 units last month which was equal to 92.5 per cent of the combined top 15 volume. The other nine manufacturers accounted for just 31,479 units. The narrowest contest near the top sat between Mahindra and Tata where just 1,661 units separated second and third place.
