The Hyundai Tucson’s fifth generation comes alive with a radically new exterior, wider cabin and a more premium features list
Hyundai has unveiled the all-new Tucson in its fifth generation avatar which arrives six years after the outgoing model was launched in late 2020. The Korean auto major has framed the new SUV around a radically new exterior alongside class-leading interior space. The rear of the SUV gains a full-width lighting bar running across the tailgate with a vertical red light element built into each side and the Hyundai badge sitting centrally between “TUCSON” lettering.
Squared-off wheel arches and a boxier overall stance replace the edgy body panels of the outgoing model and a raised roof spoiler sits above a near-vertical rear windscreen. The front end gets a redesigned nose dominated by a sleek full-width light bar placed above a blacked-out lower grille section. The vertical daytime running lights sit further down at each corner – described by Hyundai as H-edge lighting inspired by architectural design.
Hyundai says the front lighting draws on the brand’s “Art of Steel” design language built around an indirect lighting structure where the light source itself stays hidden from view emphasising the surfacing rather than the lamp housing. Dimensions grow across the board as well as the new Tucson measures 4,700 mm in length, 1,905 mm in width and 1,685 mm in height and it rides on a 2,785 mm wheelbase.
The overall length has increased by 60 mm and the wheelbase by 30 mm over the outgoing model while width has grown by 40 mm. The second row headroom has risen by 29 mm to 1,031 mm and the opening angle of the rear doors widened to 83 degrees from 73 degrees for easy entry and exit for rear passengers. On the inside, it is apparent that the cabin is built around two connected displays sitting under one shared housing – a digital instrument cluster on the left along with a larger touchscreen running navigation and media on the right.
A two-spoke steering wheel with physical buttons sits ahead of the driver while orange-toned ambient lighting runs along the lower dashboard and door panels. It is set against light coloured leather upholstery across the front seats and door trim. As many as eight exterior colours will be offered at launch including five new options and three of which Hyundai has named as Serenity White Pearl, Driftwood Gray Matte and Driftwood Gray Metallic.
An XRT trim joins the range too for those seeking an active outdoor lifestyle. It is distinguished by a more rugged design treatment than the standard SUV. Hyundai has not released powertrain details for the new Tucson at this stage but the outgoing model’s combination of hybrid and non-hybrid options suggests continuity in that part of the lineup.
