Kia confirms plans to build a line-up of eight electrified models in India by 2029, including both pure electric and hybrid vehicles
Following the launch of the EV6, EV9, and Carens Clavis EV between 2022 and 2025, Kia is accelerating its efforts on the electrification front. The company launched the Syros EV last month, and by 2029 it has confirmed plans to add six more electrified models to its Indian line-up, including even HEVs.
On 4 September, Kia will launch the Sorento Hybrid as its first hybrid model in India. The Sorento Hybrid is the company’s D-segment hybrid SUV, designed for families and other customers who frequently travel in large groups. Kia will likely offer it only in a seven-seat version in India. The company is assembling the Sorento Hybrid from imported knocked-down kits and will price it competitively to position it against the Skoda Kodiaq and VW Tayron.
In early 2027, Kia will launch the Carnival Hybrid, with a powertrain similar to the one used in the Sorento Hybrid, one based on a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine. However, unlike the Sorento Hybrid, the Carnival Hybrid will likely be a CBU import, which would make it much pricier. The Carnival Hybrid would provide customers a quieter, smoother, and more fuel-efficient alternative to the diesel-powered Carnival.

In mid-2027 Kia will likely launch the Seltos Hybrid. This will be the brand’s first hybrid model manufactured in India, and it will be heavily localised. While the internationally sold Seltos Hybrid uses a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, the India-made Seltos Hybrid will have a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine under the hood. Like in other markets, though, Kia may offer an option for e-AWD, enabled by a second electric motor that powers the rear axle.
Between 2028 and 2029, Kia plans to introduce hybrid variants of the Sonet and Carens and an A-segment electric SUV, potentially a corporate cousin of Hyundai’s HE1i coming in early 2027. The hybrid variant of the Sonet and Carens should arrive following a full redesign for the second generation.

Reports say Kia is also working on a new B-segment model measuring around 4.2 metres in length and positioned below the Seltos for India. This model is expected to be an SUV and be introduced with a pure electric powertrain. The company could also launch this model between 2028 and 2029. A new C-segment model is also under consideration, and that may also be offered with at least one electrified powertrain.
