New Hyundai Tucson Could Come To India With Hybrid Power

The fifth-generation Tucson gets a bigger body, a completely redesigned cabin and an updated hybrid powertrain that could make it more interesting for India

Hyundai has unveiled the fifth-generation Tucson in South Korea, and there is a possibility that the new SUV could eventually make its way to India. The company has not confirmed an India launch yet, but if it does arrive, the biggest change could be under the bonnet. The new Tucson is expected to offer an updated 1.6-litre strong-hybrid powertrain, which could give Hyundai an interesting alternative to the conventional petrol and diesel SUVs currently sold in this segment.

The new Tucson is noticeably different from the outgoing model. Hyundai has gone for a boxier, more upright design, while the larger footprint should also free up more space inside the cabin. Hyundai says second-row headroom has increased by 29 mm, while the rear doors can open up to 83 degrees. That should make getting into and out of the back seat a little easier, particularly for older passengers.

The cabin is where the transformation becomes even more obvious. The new Tucson gets a large portrait-oriented central touchscreen running Hyundai’s Pleos infotainment system, along with a slim digital driver’s display and a new two-spoke steering wheel. The floating centre console also creates additional storage underneath, while ambient lighting and dual wireless smartphone charging add to the more premium feel.

Hyundai hasn’t revealed the complete powertrain line-up for the new Tucson yet, but an updated 1.6-litre hybrid is expected to be one of its key global options. Petrol and plug-in hybrid powertrains could also continue in selected markets. If Hyundai brings the hybrid to India, it could make considerable sense here, particularly for buyers looking for better efficiency in city traffic without giving up the convenience of a petrol engine on long journeys.

There are currently no confirmed India-spec power figures for the new Tucson. Hyundai has also not announced which engine, gearbox or battery configuration it would use for our market. So, while the hybrid is the most interesting possibility, it would be premature to quote an India-specific output or fuel-efficiency number at this stage.

The new-generation Tucson could also bring a significant technology upgrade. The larger touchscreen, newer connected-car ecosystem and redesigned cabin should give it a more premium character, while Hyundai’s latest SUVs also point towards a continued focus on advanced driver assistance features. Exactly how much of this reaches India will depend on the version Hyundai eventually decides to localise.

Hyundai is already preparing to introduce strong-hybrid technology across more of its Indian portfolio, including the next-generation Creta. Bringing the technology to the Tucson could therefore fit neatly into the company’s larger shift towards hybrid powertrains as an alternative to conventional petrol and diesel engines.
