New-2025-Maruti-Suzuki-Dzire-4.jpg

Maruti Suzuki recorded 1,35,962 units in May 2025 as against 1,44,002 units with a YoY sales decline of 6 per cent in India

Maruti Suzuki ended the month of May 2025 clocking 1,35,962 units domestically – slipping 6 per cent from where it stood a year ago. Compared to April, the month-on-month change wasn’t as severe but still pointed downward at 2 per cent. Sitting at the top of the pile was the Dzire. At 18,084 units, it wasn’t just the company’s highest-selling model for May but posted a 13 per cent gain over last year as well.

The compact sedan continued a positive climb with a 6 per cent lift over April. It was followed closely by the Ertiga, which improved both on year by 16 per cent and on monthly 2 per cent, ending May at 16,140 units. The Brezza posted its own high, pushing past 15,500 units and recording a 10 per cent year-on-year increase.

However, it had dropped 8 per cent compared to April. The Swift, once a default volume driver, took a noticeable tumble – falling 27 per cent against May 2024 to 14,135 units and trailing April by 3 per cent. The Wagon R and Fronx continued neck-and-neck, both hovering in the 13,000s. The former saw a 4 per cent decline year-on-year but managed to claw back 4 per cent from April’s figures.

The Fronx inched up by 7 per cent year-on-year, though May’s total was still 5 per cent lower than what it managed in April. The Eeco moved to 12,327 units, improving on both counts – 12 per cent higher than last May and 8 per cent above April. Baleno, in contrast, slid further into the red, falling 10 per cent on year and 12 per cent on month, dropping to 11,618.

The Grand Vitara dropped to just 5,197 units – almost halving compared to last year’s 9,736. Even from April, it shed 27 per cent. The Alto’s decline was similarly sharp, dropping 35 per cent year-on-year to finish below 5,000 units and falling 11 per cent versus April. The XL6 managed to hold a minor gain on year, up 8 per cent but shed 15 per cent compared to April.

The budget hatchbacks, meanwhile, looked far more unstable. The Celerio lost 44 per cent over last May and was down to 1,861 units while Ignis also continued its downward slope, falling 12 per cent year-on-year and 4 per cent over April. Despite small volumes, the S-Presso saw a 149 per cent rise both on year and on month, bouncing from just 726 units in April to 1,806 in May.

The Jimny also reported a massive 149 per cent year-on-year jump but given it was introduced not too long ago, the base figure from last year was just 274 units. At 682 units, May still marked a 58 per cent gain over April. At the very bottom, Ciaz and Invicto brought in 458 and 223 units respectively. While both numbers are modest, Ciaz gained 43 per cent month-on-month and Invicto by 16 per cent year-on-year.

Mahindra Model Wise Sales May 2025 – Scorpio, Thar, Bolero, XUV 3XO

GaadiWaadi -

Mahindra Thar And Scorpio

Mahindra continued to be the country’s second largest PV brand in May 2025 with sales exceeding the 50k mark and a YoY growth of 21.3 percent

Mahindra & Mahindra retained the position of country’s second largest passenger vehicle brand in May 2025 sales behind Maruti Suzuki. However, the brand witnessed a significant YoY growth of 21.3 percent with volumes of 52,431 units against the 43,218 units sold during the same month last year. The company also managed to increase its market share from 12.4 percent to 15 percent. The most significant contribution in this phenomenal sales performance came from the Thar SUV with sales of 10k+ units at a stellar YoY growth of 81 percent.

Mahindra Scorpio, as usual, continued its golden patch with sales of 14,401 units in May 2025. It was the fifth best-selling model in the list of top 10 passenger vehicles last month. The company had retailed 13,717 units of the SUV in May 2024. Mahindra sold a total of 10,389 units of the Thar and Thar Roxx, which is up from 5,750 units in May 2024.

Mahindra Bolero, the veteran warhorse, too had a decent time with 8,942 units being retailed in May 2025. The sales witnessed a YoY rise by 11 percent as 8,026 units were sold during the same month last year. The XUV 3XO, however, registered a YoY decline in sales by 20 percent as numbers went down to 7,952 units in May 2025 from 10,000 units in May 2024.

The recently launched born-electric SUV models, the BE 6 and XEV 9e, registered sales of 1,206 units and 2,815 units, respectively, in May 2025. Mahindra is leaving no stone unturned in reducing the waiting period of both these all-electric SUVs by ramping up the production at its Chakan facility in Maharashtra.

The brand’s yet another all-electric SUV, the XUV 4OO, didn’t live up to Mahindra’s expectations with dismal sales numbers of 287 units against 701 units sold in May 2024. Last but not the least, only 4 units of the Marazzo MPV were sold as compared to the 16 units retailed during the same month last year. The Pune-based two-wheeler brand has already ceased the production of the Marazzo MPV and a few units are still in dealer inventory.

MG Windsor EV

MG posted a wholesale tally of 6,304 units in May 2025, marking a 40 per cent increase over 4,510 units sold during the same period last year

JSW MG Motor India recorded a wholesale tally of 6,304 units in May 2025, marking a 40 per cent jump over the 4,510 units in the same period last year. The spike in numbers was largely driven by the recently launched Pro variant of the Windsor which has quickly become the brand’s strongest volume contributor.

The Windsor carried nearly two-thirds of the brand’s total volume last month. The rest of the range, however, mostly slipped backward. While the Windsor EV posted 3,939 units, the Hector could only manage a total of 1,098 units last month as against 1,906 units in May 2024 with a massive YoY decline of 42 per cent.

The Comet EV came in at this with a domestic tally of 823 units in May 2025 as against 1,200 units during the corresponding period twelve months ago with a YoY de-growth of 31 per cent. Triple-digit growth pushed its MoM number past 330 per cent, indicating a possible recovery in demand. The ZS EV, meanwhile, dropped sharply in both YoY and MoM terms.

Popularity Of CNG Cars On The Rise In India – Here’s Why

GaadiWaadi -

Maruti Dzire CNG

EVs maybe the long-term eco-friendly solution, but until ICE remains relevant, CNG is likely to be the go-to choice for an increasing number of car buyers, promising both frugality and reduced carbon emissions

With increasing fuel costs and the government’s growing anti-diesel stance in metro cities, CNG cars are becoming increasingly popular in India. Customers are now increasingly preferring CNG cars over petrol models as well. According to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), CNG models accounted for 19.5% of car sales in FY2025. In FY2020, that figure stood at just 6.3%, which means their market share has more than tripled in five years.

Meanwhile, the demand for petrol cars has considerably declined. Their contribution to sales reduced from 76.3% in FY2020 to 57.7% in FY2025. Diesel cars were already quite low in demand in FY2020, and the transition to BS6 that year didn’t help. Their market share has remained around 17-19% since then.

FY2026 is likely to be a new record year for CNG cars, with more than one million units expected to be sold for the first time. That would mean approximately a 20% growth in sales over FY2025 when more than 8.39 lakh CNG cars were sold.

The rising demand for CNG cars has not gone unnoticed. Mass-market brands like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Hyundai are capitalising on the shift in consumer preference by widening their portfolio of CNG cars. Between FY2021 and FY2025, it is estimated that choices have more than doubled from 11 to 25 models.

Automakers are also actively working on solving the shortcomings of CNG cars. For example, Tata Motors and Hyundai now use two smaller cylinders instead of a large one to improve boot space. Meanwhile, the government is doing its bit, expanding the availability of CNG stations across the nation. It has set a target of growing from 7,400 CNG pumps to 17,500 outlets by 2030.

Maruti Suzuki offers the widest range of models with a CNG option: Alto, S-Presso, Wagon R, Celerio, Eeco, Swift, Brezza, Dzire, Baleno, Fronx, Ertiga, XL6, and Grand Vitara. Barring the Curvv, Harrier, and Safari, Tata Motors offers its entire line-up with a CNG option: Tiago, Tigor, Punch, Altroz, and Nexon. The company is testing a CNG variant of the Curvv and is expected to launch it in the coming months. Hyundai has a quite small CNG portfolio, limited to just three models: Grand i10 Nios, Aura, and Exter.

Top 10 Midsize SUVs May 2025 – Creta, Scorpio, Vitara, Taigun, XUV700

GaadiWaadi -

Mahindra Scorpio N Napoli Black Edition 2025

In May 2025, Hyundai Creta continued to be on top of the midsize SUV sales table ahead of Scorpio, Hyryder, XUV700, Seltos and Grand Vitara

The sales across the midsize SUV segment in May saw some models climb the rankings while others slid down. The Hyundai Creta, still operating at the top, managed to retain its position by closing the month with 14,860 units dispatched. The tally barely nudged over last year’s tally but in a segment loaded with volatility, holding steady counts for something.

Right behind, Mahindra’s Scorpio – split across Classic and N variants – recorded 14,401 units. While the vehicle continues to thrive on its rural and semi-urban appeal, its numbers reflect modest growth year-on-year, up 5 per cent. The Toyota Hyryder, meanwhile, posted the kind of spike that tends to raise eyebrows – sales nearly doubled, jumping to 7,573 units from just under 4,000 a year ago.

The Mahindra XUV700 registered a measured step forward – 6,435 units found dealerships in May, representing a 28 per cent increase over last year’s volume. It remains the brand’s most tech-forward ICE SUV and continues to push deeper into new markets. Sitting just beneath that line, Kia’s Seltos wrapped the month at 6,082 units.

9 Volkswagen Taigun (-28%) 1,126 1,561

The domestic tally represents a dip of 10 per cent compared to last May. The next-gen Seltos is currently under development and it will make its global debut sometime in 2026. Following its world premiere, we can expect it to arrive in India as well with a thoroughly overhauled exterior and interior while a new hybrid system could join the fray.

The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara garnered a total of 5,197 units in the month of May 2025 as against 9,736 units during the same period last year with a sharp slide of 47 per cent. Below the established contenders, Tata’s Curvv has been putting in decent numbers. At 3,063 units, the coupe SUV finished seventh within the top 10 sales charts for midsize SUVs.

Tata Motors Model Wise Sales May 2025 – Nexon, Punch, Tiago, Curvv

GaadiWaadi -

tata punch EV

Tata Motors didn’t have the best of times during May 2025 as most of its models, barring the Nexon and Tiago, struggled to perform in the domestic market

Tata Motors lost the third position in May 2025 domestic sales in the passenger vehicle segment in the Indian market. It slipped to the fourth spot as Hyundai bounced back to capture the third slot. Tata sold a total of 41,557 units last month as compared to 46,700 units retailed during May 2024, and hence witnessing a sharp YoY decline of 11 percent. Its market share also fell down by 1.5 percent from 13.4 percent in May’24 to 11.9 percent to May’25. The Nexon and Punch SUVs had decent sales numbers last month as the company sold more than 13k units of the duo domestically.

First things first, Tata Punch, despite selling 13,133 units in May 2025, recorded a massive YoY de-growth of 31 percent. For reference, the brand had retailed 18,949 units of the Punch in May 2024. The Nexon, on the other hand, witnessed a slight YoY growth of 14 percent in May 2025 with numbers of 13,096 units as compared to 11,457 units sold during the same month last year.

Tata Tiago was the third highest-selling model in the company’s portfolio in May 2025 with volumes of 6407 units against 5,927 units retailed during the same month last year. It is the only Tata model after the Nexon to register a YoY growth in May 2025 sales. Tata Curvv sales numbers came down to 3,063 units last month, which is a signal that it has already started to lose its charm among the buyers.

Recently, the 2025 Tata Altroz facelift was launched in the Indian market. However, it had little to zero impact on the dwindling sales numbers of the hatchback as merely 2,779 units were sold last month against 4,983 units in May 2024. The Tigor too continued its dismal performance with volumes coming down to 1076 units from 2098 units in May 2024.

The SUV duo of Harrier and Safari also had a tough time last month as both suffered heavy losses amidst the rising competition. While the Harrier numbers came down to triple digits (894 units) for the first time with YoY negative growth of 45 percent, the Safari too faced a setback with numbers coming down to 1109 units. Just so you know, Tata Motors had retailed 1,625 and 1,661 units of the Harrier and Safari, respectively, in May 2024.

Even the delivery timeline of the all-electric SUV was kept under the wraps. The bookings for the Harrier e-SUV will begin from July 2, 2025 across the country. It is the sixth all-electric model in Tata’s portfolio after the Tiago, Tigor, Nexon, Punch and Curvv.

Maruti Swift Long Term Review – 2 Months Report

Maruti-Swift-Long-Term-7

The Maruti Suzuki Swift has truly become a household name in India over the last 25 years and why not? It is one of the most fun to drive cars made by the automaker and yet it excels at many other things as well. The Swift entered the MotorBeam long term fleet when I had just sold my Honda City and hence I started using this as my daily driver.

Maruti-Swift-Long-Term-5

I was looking forward to the Swift for two things. One – it is always handy driving a compact car in Mumbai. The convenience is unparalleled. Second – I had the previous generation Swift diesel as my long termer for 18 months close to 6 years back and I loved every bit of it, which is why I wanted to actually live with the new Swift and see how it is as a daily car.

Maruti-Swift-Long-Term-3

Let’s get straight to the engine. The new Z-Series engine drew a lot of flak for it being a 3-cylinder unit and slower than the previous K-Series engine and that does hold true. The K-Series unit was more refined and quicker as well, but the new engine doesn’t disappoint that much. I found in-city driveability to be very good and the Swift felt peppy enough to make day-to-day drives less boring. Sure, at low RPMs the engine does vibrate a bit and our test car used to vibrate a little more than usual.

Maruti-Swift-Long-Term-11

Once the revs settle, the engine feels smooth and offers clean performance. I found the performance good on highways as well and it was fun redlining the Swift whenever I got a chance. In fact, I remember our Swift having some wheelspin in 3rd gear too when pushing hard.

Maruti-Swift-Long-Term-6

But what about mileage? While the claimed figure is 24.8 km/l, I got a realistic figure of 14.5 km/l in the city and close to 17.5 km/l on highways. The number can differ based on your driving style and usage. The lowest I saw on this car was around 12.5 km/l on a shoot day.

Maruti-Swift-Long-Term-9

I found the Swift quite engaging to drive. It darts well into corners and the driving position is spot on too. The steering though not feedback rich is still precise enough and the suspension has a firm edge. However, what I noticed on Mumbai’s poor roads is that every bump, every undulation, even the smallest ones make their presence felt in the cabin. A long drive in the city can make you feel a little tired if the roads are bad.

Maruti-Swift-Long-Term-4

I was always in the driver’s seat and loved the comfort I got over there. The touchscreen is also intuitive to use but the sound quality at high volumes is strictly average. I really missed a front centre armrest in this car. The cabin is very plasticky as well and some premium touches would be really welcome.

Maruti-Swift-Long-Term-10

It was a short stint with the Swift since we had send it back to Maruti Suzuki at the end of 2 months. Overall, a pretty sorted hatchback that won’t disappoint Indian customers across demographics.
